The first weekend of June MAPS
will be holding a fundraising luncheon in Eugene. The event will consist of a
one hour informational session on MAPS,
and will be followed by a QA by Rick Doblin. It does not cost any money to
attend the event, although MAPS will be asking for donations.
The Multidisciplinary Association
for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) MAPS is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization
whose goal is to promote scientific research designed to evaluate MDMA, other
psychedelics and marijuana as potential prescription medicines, and to educate
the public honestly about the risks and benefits of these drugs. MAPS has
supported the following:
1. An FDA-approved study of
the therapeutic use of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for people who have
Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.
2. The efforts to implement
a pilot study into the use of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy in subjects dealing
with end of life issues, having end stage cancer.
3. A lawsuit against DEA
for blocking a MAPS-sponsored facility to produce marijuana exclusively for
federally-approved research
This June, there will be a
fundraising event for MAPS--the "Telling the Truth" luncheon.
(Some of you might have attended a similar luncheon in Portland, OR this past
December). It will be on June 4th, from 1 - 2pm in Eugene, OR. It
will be a free one-hour event, with a Q and A afterwards with Rick Doblin, MAPS'
President, for those who want to stay. No one is required to make a
donation and as much as anything, it's a way to hear about the work done by
MAPS.
I would love to see you at the
luncheon. If you are interested in attending, please RSVP with your contact
information (name, address, phone number, and email) to Sara Haimowitz at
mirandah9@hotmail.com, and I will send you a "Save the Date"
card. I need the RSVP, as it's a catered event, and I will need to know
how many lunches to serve.
If you are interested in
attending, please get in touch with Sara Haimowitz at mirandah9@hotmail.com, or
call 541-517-4032.
Thanks so much for your time and
consideration.
Sincerely,
Sara Haimowitz

MAPS
MAPS, which stands for the
Multi-Disciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, was started in 1986 by
Rick Doblin. The organization was originally formed in response to the Federal
Scheduling of MDMA ("Ecstasy"), a drug which at that point in time
had showed substantial promise as an aid in therapy, particularly for PTSD, end
of life care, and couples counseling. The organizations objective was to push
for further investigations into the potential of MDMA as a therapeutic aid, and
for eventual rescheduling to allow use in therapeutic settings.
It has taken MAPS 20 years, but
they have been successful in compelling further studies of the therapeutic
value of MDMA, as well as helping to launch efforts to investigate the use of
psilocybin to treat cluster headaches, and other therapeutic uses of
psychedelics, including LSD. MAPS is also currently playing a pivotal role into
the investigations of the therapeutic value of cannabis, including petitioning
for the University of Massachusetts to become an alternative source of
marijuana to the "schwag" grown by NIDA at the University of
Mississippi, which is currently the only legal source of marijuana for
scientific research.
To say the least, MAPS is one of
the most progressive organizations in the drug reform movement, and has 20
years of hard work to fall back on. More information on MAPS can be found at
their website: www.MAPS.org
If you are
interested in attending the fundraiser on June 4th, please let me know. It will
be a catered luncheon so we will need to confirm how many people will be
attending in the next week or so. The Fundraiser will be an opportunity to
learn about MAPS, and will be followed by a QA with Rick Doblin. Rick Doblin,
the founder of MAPS, is one of the "Big Dogs" of the psychedelic movement,
and the opportunity to ask questions of Rick will definately be a unique, if
not rare opportunity.
Again, it is
a fundraiser, but no one is required to make any donations. Please contact me
ASAP if you are interested in attending. Please consider supporting this Drug
Reform Organization, if not by a financial contribution then by your presence
and show of support.
More Notes, News and Information on the Event and Hosts
Dear Friends,
I am writing to tell you about an event for The Multidiscplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies
(MAPS--www.maps.org, a 501 (c) 3 non profit organization. MAPS' mission is to
support scientific research designed to develop psychedelics and marijuana into FDA-approved prescription medicines,
and to educate the public honestly about the risks and benefits of these drugs.
I’d like to invite you to the “Telling the Truth” luncheon. This is a free lunch for people to come and learn more about
MAPS. It is also a fundraiser. You will be asked to consider making a contribution. There is no
minimum and no maximum gift requested. It will be the job of the organization to inspire people to want to
give. As much as anything, we want people to come and find out about the really important work being done by
this organization.
I would be delighted if you could join me. The “Telling the Truth” event will be on December 4th, 1-2pm at the
CenterRing in Portland, OR, located at 5339 SE Foster Rd. in Portland, OR. There will be a Q and A afterwards
with the MAPS director, Rick Doblin, if you wish to stay for that.
If you are interested in coming to the event, please get in touch with me (because we are serving lunch, I need to know how
many people are coming).
Thank you!
