RALLY FOR
RESCHEDULING: DEMAND HHS RESCHEDULE MARIJUANA NOW!
Wed.,
October 26th, 6am - 7:30am * Meet Up for Bus to Rally in Seattle in Portland. ASA/Oregon
won the long distance award from ASA-National for the Rally, so ASA will now
pay for bus trip. Special thanks to Voter Power for getting this ball rolling
so they can go on OPM. They have made
arrangement for buses to drive them to Seattle from Portland and they will all
be getting together at the Blue Bamboo Restaurant, located at 2218 N.E. 82nd ,
Portland. Your encouraged to visit the restaurant soon and thank them for
the support. This info from Jim Grieg,
ASA/Oregon organizer -
We have people from both Washington and Oregon going to HHS on Wednesday, so
I've included the information and map links to all of the stops Oregon is making and
the Seattle staging area too.
We all plan on meeting in Seattle shortly after 11 AM on Wednesday.
Here are my trip plans for the Rescheduling Rally, starting in Eugene. You
can join us anywhere along the route. See you there.
=======================================================
I'm first going to the '408 house' in Eugene, meeting with other locals,
leaving about 4:00 AM for Portland and meeting with everyone else from Oregon
at the Blue Bamboo Restaurant on Wednesday, October 26 about 6 AM.
There are several people going from Eugene and we could use another car/van. Any
other drivers coming from Eugene or points South?
All activists are invited but only OMMA cardholders will be allowed in the rear
portion of the restaurant where there will be a medication area set up. All
others need to go to the front portion of the restaurant before 7:00 AM.
Plan on arriving shortly after 6 AM at the Blue Bamboo in Portland. The
address is 2218 82nd. Ave., Portland. (See the mapquest link below)
We will board about 7 AM and need to be on our way by 7:30 at the latest.
Does anyone have breakfast ideas/solutions? Please let Trista or me know. Snacks
for the way are also encouraged, someone might get hungry.
We will be making a rest stop along the way, and meeting with other activists
in Seattle around 11 AM at Mama Mexican Restaurant, 2234 2nd. Ave. Seattle,
WA 98121. (See that mapquest link below too)
If you arrive late, join us at HHS, address listed below. (Yes, mapquest link here too)
The Rally starts at Noon!
See you then,
Jim Greig & Trista Okel

They will arrive
in Seattle about 3 hours later to have breakfast with the other state's
Activists and prepare for the Rally. After they have made their point and
the Rally is over, they will return to Portland.
Voter Power wants
to make sure that the ASA bus is filled up for our journey so they are looking
to sponsor five patients to join us on the bus for the journey.
The first five
people to respond to this offer can be the guest of Voter Power on an all
expense paid round trip to beautiful downtown Seattle (almost sounds like a
contest). In order to 'qualify' for their offer you must be a cardholding
patient or caregiver and you must not be able to afford the costs for each
person to go. If you have the money then please allow someone else who doesn't
to take advantage of their offer. Contact:
Chris Iverson at: samadhi2012@yahoo.com

The forest
protection group Back2Wall is the owner of the bus and they are letting us use
it for almost 1/2 of the previous low bid. They always use bio-diesel and by
coincidence the driver that day is also an OMMA Patient.
If you are
interested in doing something to get MMJ rescheduled from Schedule 1 to
Schedule 3, sign up on their list-serve (http://lists.riseup.net/www/info/asa-or)
and make plans for joining them.
I have included a link to the on line Petition, so far
with only 677 signatures and letters to Michael
Levitte, Secretary Health and Human Services, and less
than 20 from Oregon.
http://www.demaction.org/dia/organizations/asa/petition.jsp?petition_KEY=107
Many of you signed the petition at Hempstalk, but
since we got around 1,000 signatures there, and have
another 600+ from Eugene, we are missing at least
10,000 patients and many others.
How can 10,000+ Patients disappear?
ASA will keep us all updated with their efforts on a
National front, and I encourage all of you to submit
information of interest to this site. We all say we
are trying to get as much information out to the
patients as possible, so here is another way.
Thanks much and see you all soon.

ALERT! From: Americans for Safe Access
(ASA) - www.safeaccessnow.org
RALLY
FOR RESCHEDULING: DEMAND HHS RESCHEDULE MARIJUANA!
TIME IS UP: WE NEED OUR MEDICINE
NOW!
WHAT: RALLY FOR
RESCHEDULING MARIJUANA
WHERE: HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES (HHS), WASHINGTON DC, BOSTON, NEW YORK, PHILADELPHIA, ATLANTA,
CHICAGO, DALLAS, KANSAS CITY, DENVER, SAN FRANCISCO & SEATTLE
WHEN: WEDNESDAY,
OCTOBER 26, 2005 - 12 NOON
WHO: PATIENTS, DOCTORS, ADVOCATES & YOU!
WHY: MARIJUANA WAS WRONGLY PUT IN THE SAME CATEGORY AS HEROIN AS A
DANGEROUS DRUG WITH NO MEDICAL VALUE. WE ARE CALLING ON HHS TO LISTEN TO
SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH AND RECOGNIZE MARIJUANA AS MEDICINE!
WHAT
IS IT?
In 2002, Americans for Safe Access as part of
a larger coalition submitted a formal petition demanding marijuana be
rescheduled. Last year, ASA activists gathered at the Health and Human Services
building in DC to turn up the heat. ASA simultaneously launched a Data Quality
Act petition requesting HHS make corrections to published administrative
statements regarding the accepted medical value of marijuana. HHS continues to
drag its feet. It's time to turn up the heat: Another year is too long for
patients to wait!
WHY
HHS?
To ensure safe and legal access for ALL
patients, marijuana must be rescheduled. In order for rescheduling to occur the
federal government must acknowledge marijuana's accepted medical value. In 2001
HHS ruled that marijuana had, "No currently accepted medical use in
treatment." They did not, however, address the mountain of data that
recognizes cannabis as a useful treatment, by itself or as an adjunct to other
therapies, for a variety of chronic conditions. Some of these conditions
include cancer, HIV/AIDS, chronic pain, multiple sclerosis, osteoarthritis,
glaucoma, and migraines but this is not an exhaustive list.
WHY
OCTOBER 26th?
On September 26th, HHS is set to
issue a response to the DQA petition. Over the past year, they have delayed
again and again. October 26th marks a thirty-day countdown until we
will take legal action against HHS. We will not wait any longer - it is time to
turn up the heat!
WHAT
SHOULD I DO?
- ORGANIZE
A REGIONAL ACTION: We need local organizers
in DC and the ten HHS regions to coordinate an action at each of these
offices. The goal is to increase the pressure on HHS: Time is up - we
cannot wait for our medicine! Click to find your
local HHS office. Please contact Rebecca if you're interested in
organizing an action: (510) 251-1856 or rebecca@safeaccessnow.org
- ATTEND
A REGIONAL ACTION: Patients, doctors and
advocates are invited to join us at each of these actions. To find out who
is organizing each regional action, contact Rebecca at (510) 251-1856 or rebecca@safeaccessnow.org
- SIGN
AND CIRCULATE THE PETITION FOR RESCHEDULING: Sign the petition
online or download
the petition to circulate in your community. Please collect these and
send them to the ASA office no later than October 17th:

1322 Webster Street Ste. 208

WHO
ARE WE?
Americans for Safe Access (ASA) is the
largest national grassroots coalition working to protect the rights of patients
and doctors to legally use marijuana for medical purposes. Our mission is to
ensure safe, legal access to marijuana for all who are helped by it. We provide
legal training for lawyers and patients, medical information for doctors and
patients, media support for court cases, activist training to grassroots
organizers, and rapid response to law enforcement encounters. We work with
local, state and national legislators to raise awareness of issues concerning
medical marijuana patients. Our successful media and legal campaigns have
resulted in important court precedents, new sentencing standards, and more
compassionate community guidelines.
