Marijuana is completely illegal in the country of Cyprus, as are all of the activities associated with it; smoking, buying, selling, possessing, cultivating. Penalties for any of these behaviors are very harsh Cypriot police do not take marijuana offenses lightly at all, and if they even suspect you of illegal behaviors they will harass and search you without hesitation. Do not carry in this country for any length of time, ever.
The police in Cyprus do not care for foreigners, and they particularly do not care for white (Euro) foreigners, so you must practice extreme discretion whether you are trying to find, trying to smoke, or trying to buy marijuana. There are plenty of cops in Cyprus, so be aware of that also.

Do not waste your time ambling around aimlessly trying to establish a contact, make some friends or acquaintances, and then you might be able to find a good connection. It isn’t only the cops who dislike white foreigners, lots of Cypriots do too, and if you ask the wrong one they might be very happy to turn you in. Go to some parties and see if you can’t find people smoking out; that might be a good place to start.
Take your time, and don’t be greedy. Allow yourself to suss out the scene for a while before plunging in to buy. Remember the cops are paying extra special attention to you in all your whiteness. Be careful and be aware.

Be very very careful, there is a zero tolerance with the Police and there are no class A or B drugs, its drugs and your nicked, there are 4 highly successful sniffer dogs here now I have seen them at Ercan, the ferry port in Girne and the walkover border at the end of ledra street.

Marijuana is in Schedule IV of the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, making it subject to special restrictions. Article 2 provides for the following, in reference to Schedule IV drugs:
A Party shall, if in its opinion the prevailing conditions in its country render it the most appropriate means of protecting the public health and welfare, prohibit the production, manufacture, export and import of, trade in, possession or use of any such drug except for amounts which may be necessary for medical and scientific research only, including clinical trials therewith to be conducted under or subject to the direct supervision and control of the Party.
This provision, while apparently providing for the limitation of marijuana to research purposes only, also seems to allow some latitude for nations to make their own judgments. The official Commentary on the Single Convention indicates that Parties are expected to make that judgment in good faith.

Legislation: Marijuana is illegal and so is any related action. In the eyes of the Cypriot Police Force using the good old “Its for personal use.” doesn’t quite cut it.
Law enforcement: If the cops notice you doing anything even vaguely suspicious, they’ll come up and start giving you all sorts of shit. Extreme discretion when smoking publicly is advised. The best time and place to smoke without being bothered is in either a school or on the beach late at night. Police Brutality usually goes unpunished and they intensely dislike foreigners, especially English ones. So watch your arse.
Where to buy marijuana: Sorry, but if you havent got the hook-up youre pretty much screwed. Even if you do have the hook up, its still a real hassle to get some puff (you have to order it in advance, wait 5 hours for it, jump through a whole load of unnecessary hoops basically).
Marijuana prices: After Cyprus replaced the pound with the euro the prices went sky high.
It used to be 10CYP per gram and you could find the occasional ounce for 200 (really nice Cypriot homegrown shit aswell).
But times have changed, its mainly hash now and if you can find any weed it’ll be a shitty amount and its all incredibly expensive:
20-30 Euros-1g of Lebanese, Moroccan or Afgani hash
20-25 Euros-1g of some skanky dirt weed mixed with male leaves 40-50 Euros-1g of Skunk. (Not bad stuff, but who in their right minds would pay that kind of dosh for one gram?)
Marijuana brands: Moroccan Hash–hard, dark. Fluffs up nicely when heated.
Lebanese Hash–Very golden colour. Really uplifting high.
Afgani Black–The Sticky Stuff.
Sketchy local dirtweed–Smells sketchy, tastes sketchier. Usually a crap amount with alot of stems. No seeds though.
Skunk–Its well good shit.

Legislation: forbidden. but since the island is so rural and desrted; no one sees no one so much. much of the people do not recognize it.
Law enforcement: despite everything if you’re caught, don’t deny; accept that you’re smoking. by that behaviour your punishment will be less and less. You’ll probably spend a night in the police station then you’ll be freed.
Where to buy marijuana: Usually in bet offices it’s sold in good quality. It is recommended to bring yours from your country…
Marijuana prices: 10gr is 30 dollars.
Brands: rare and hard to find but excellent.

Cannabis sentences can reach 8 years. You are legally allowed 30 grams or 3 plants not to be considered a dealer (if you’re not a dealer you get a huge fine and/or a small sentence).
Law enforcement: do not even think of smoking in public. you will be arrested immediately. never have marijuana on you as you walk through the city at late times e.g 2 A.M+ if the cops see you and you look suspect you may be searched.
this is unlikely but it can happen. The cops will take you down beat the shit out of you if they are in the mood take the weed from there selfs andf take you in!!! If get to court you will be setenced.

Where to buy marijuana: you can’t buy marijuana unless you know people.. At this time of the year even people with good connections find it hard to find.*this is happening only this year* it is impossible to buy from the street. you may find in psychedelic parties.
Local contacts, such as private college students, teenagers and a few bars( that are owned by snitches, never go there). There are no street dealers and undercover cops waltz around all the time!
Marijuana prices: if you are lucky you can find skunk for 35
euros per gram and weed for 20
Local weed(old shit)- 10 cyprus pounds per gram( make sure its a gram )
“Skunk” 15-20 pounds per gram
40-50 pounds for 3 grams
100 pounds for 7-8 grams
Marijuana brands: although it is very hard to find,if your lucky enough to find it is almost impossible that you will get shitty stuff. anything you get will be very good. cypriot weed and skunk kick ass. hash is not so popular and few people smoke it.
If you’re extremely lucky you can find white widow or such brands brought from holland in the summer. other than that its all old skunk which is a month old and is made fresher by being laced with something or wet and then dried. Hash is extremely rare in Cyprus, and usually high quality coz its brought from Lebanon
More information: Be careful with some of the “skunk”. It can give you a huge rush as it can be laced with a random opiate such as tramadol or valium (if you’re lucky) or even weedkiller and aerosol sprays( if you’re unlucky) never give money before seeing the stuff. always be carefull and dont have with you grinders or king size papers cut for roaches. there is undercover police everywhere. if you get busted for dealing you will get punished very harshly.. if you get busted for a joint they will just take you to the police station and ask you where you found it.. they will probably get your joint and smoke it themselves. you will be free the next morning.

We will probably land in Larnaca and catch a bus to Paphos where the hotel is.

Your problem is likely to be customs, not airport security; I suggest to put the hash in your underpants while passing through security when u fly out, and then as you land and prepare to go through customs u put the hash in ur mouth in 0.5 gram pieces
- make sure u carry something to drink so u can swallow without too much hassle.
Don't get caught smoking in Cyprus though, the laws are really bad.
... Damn, i'm in the same position as Fonzee. I'm from Canada visiting Limassol for a month because there is some family that live here. I can't seem to find any weed/or hash at all! It sucks so bad! I dont understand why, the weather is perfect like it can grow anywhere due to so much sun haha.

I hail from the Island of Aphrodite - Cuz Cyprus has been trying to get into the EU for ages - even to the point for years making Cyprus/Europe tourists gifts when they were not in the EU - they have been trying to align their laws with ours - they were especially tough about it as they did not want their Famagusta issue to cloud their entry into the EU.
Unannounced, after many many years of being able to ride scooters without helmets, the Cypriot Police confiscated every scooter upon which the rider was not wearing a helmet - again in line with European law - and it upset the locals immensely.
So the same goes for drugs - and believe me, Cypriot Jail is tough. Not only do you get the pleasure of the local gorilla, but also in a cell in stifling heat with no air con, no showers, etc. If it was me, I'd rather go without weed and go for the cheap alcohol instead.
The Cypriot Police are also heavy on the night club front.
Despite all that, I do wish you an excellent time there - I wish I was going again.

What about on the turkish side of Cyprus? Are the laws as strict? I've known many Turkish people in Canada that say a lot of them use ganj.

... waytoodank - the Turkish/North side used to and still does I think close at about 5pm - if you get caught out there after time the only way back to South Cyprus/Limassol is via Turkey I am reliably informed although I have yet to hear of a first hand account of such a misfortune.
I imagine you will find it's who you know on the Turkish side as I read recently in the last couple of months they have installed a new (Prime Minister) that that is pro-partition (north/south divide) and anti-western.

I have to agree with oroklinoservices. To be honest unlike the UK, smoking weed is completely illegal here (UK government has exceptions for consuming weed within your own home). I know many people in Cyprus unfortunately for you none smoke weed, however I have heard that the villages around kokinoxoria (red-soiled villages around Agia Napa) are known (don't ask me how) for their relationship between Bob Marley and themselves. So if your looking to undertake such illegal activities that would be your best bet.
Weed for a foreigner (i.e. you) is very difficult to come by. I must warm you however, smoking weed is against the law and the Cypriot government are v.strict when it comes to foreigners (i.e. you) using illegal drugs. If you are adamant that Canadian weed is the best in the world and you are already a native in Canada you should stick to consuming weed within that country.

Although it is legal in some countries, there are laws attached to the legality of Cannabis. Unfortunately Turkish law deems that iit is illegal to possess, use, buy, sell, or cultivate marijuana.
Turkey is also a country that places values above law, similar to religious secular countries like the Philippines or the US. The country may be modern and secular but it isn't stupid enough to allow for that. A country should also be a patron to its citizenry, it should allow for its freedoms but then should also be capable of drawing the lines between what can be potentially harmful to the individual, no matter how much he wills it for himself as it is his right.

Legalizing marijuana in Cyprus |
November 2012. The Peoples of Colorado and Washington state have spoken. The vote was 55% in favor vs 45% against to the legal use of marijuana for recreational purposes, not just medical practice. Other states are considering a vote on the issue. Federal law prohibits the legal use of pot.
In Toronto, there is already talk about legalizing pot. Many politicians say this is coming earlier than expected, less than 10 years. Most feel we should do it sooner than later, keeping up with our US counterparts. The idea is to have pot under strict government control (production, distribution, taxes etc).
How can pot legalization "help" Cyprus? Well, here is a few reasons.
1. Increase much needed government revenue from taxing pot.
2. Release pot related convicted inmates from prison. Less court cases for judges to sort out.
3. Reduction of police work on pot enforcement - better policing other crimes (robberies, domestic violence etc).
4. Increase in tourists visits, especially winter tourism.
5. Take the lead in the region on this issue, stop being a follower for once.
Despite the political conservative climate, Cypriots should take a good look at this. It's not Tabu, just a good business move!

Tax is one good reason, but even more importantly there is the reason of quality control.
Many new artificial breeds of marijuana have been produced that are not really healthy.
Natural marijuana contains anti-psychotic chemicals to balance the high. These have been bred out of many strains of skunk.
Legalizing could ensure that they are kept in.
Also, personally, with my experience, I am against recreational use of marijuana, but not against spiritual use. Of course no one could police such a distinction, but by legalizing it, the debate could move on into how one can use entheogens responsibly, rather than not at all.

Hi Dude, car hire is not as expensive as UK (although most other things are dearer), they also drive on the left so very easy. The border with the 'north' is fully open to tourists and I would deffo go there, much more laid back and 'unspoilt' than the south. Be careful with your weed though, both parts have very strict drug laws.

TRENTON BUREAU:
A Senate committee today cleared a measure that would allow medical use of marijuana in New Jersey.
The Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee voted to approve the long-stalled bill by a 6 to 1 margin; two senators abstained.
The bill calls for creating “alternative treatment centers” where people with chronic and terminal diseases would be allowed access to marijuana. Supporters say marijuana is a viable treatment option to alleviate pain in many cases.
“It is the definition of basic human decency that we do whatever we can to ease the pain and suffering of people living with severe chronic and terminal diseases,” said bill sponsor Sen. Nicholas Scutari, D-Union.
“When all other avenues of currently-approved pain relief have been exhausted, we need to give doctors the freedom to prescribe medical marijuana to give their patients a measure of comfort and dignity in the face of their debilitating diseases. This bill is about the most humane, compassionate option for those state residents who have nowhere else to turn in managing their illnesses.”
If ultimately approved by the full Legislature and signed by Governor Corzine, New Jersey would be the 14th state to allow medical use of marijuana.

A new study entitled Marijuana Effectiveness as an HIV Self-Care Strategy, which was released this past weekend in Clinical Nursing Research, indicates that persons living with HIV/AIDS rate cannabis as more effective in treating the symptoms of anxiety, depression, fatigue, diarrhea, and neuropathy than other prescription and over the counter medications.
The study, which was conducted over a two year period and included 775 patients from the USA, Africa, and Puerto Rico, assessed the use of cannabis as a symptom management approach for anxiety, depression, fatigue, diarrhea, nausea, and peripheral neuropathy. 27% of survey participants reported using cannabis for medicinal purposes.
Researchers wrote that cannabis use “was rated slightly more effective than antidepressants for anxiety and depression, Imodium for diarrhea, [over the counter] (OTC) medications for fatigue, and anti-epileptics and OTC medications for neuropathy” while cannabis was rated “slightly less effective for nausea than either prescribed or OTC medications.” Authors concluded that cannabis “is perceived by users as at least as effective as prescribed medications in symptom management.”

Anti-Drugs Police (YKAN) has seized 36 cannabis plants from a 42-year-old man’s house in Nicosia.
The suspect was detained on Wednesday for the illegal possession of drugs. The plants ranged in height from 15-45cm.
The arrest comes after anti-drugs police seized over 1,600 cannabis plants in Avgorou, the largest cultivation ever found in Cyprus. Two men aged 32-years-old and 30-years-old were detained and remanded for eight-days.
Anti-Drugs Police (YKAN) are continuing to investigate the case.

Cannabis plants seized in Larnaca

Larnaca police have arrested a 24-year-old man on suspicion of illegal possessing of cannabis on Wednesday.
It is believed that Anti Drugs police (YKAN) intercepted the suspect’s car and conducted a search. They discovered a baseball bat, pepper spray and half a gram of cannabis in the driver’s vehicle.
Larnaca police then searched the drug user’s house and discovered two cannabis plants around 30cm in height each.
The 24-year-old has now been detained while the police are continuing their investigations.

Health Minister Petros Petrides clarified the intention to promote the Anti-Drugs Council amendment of the legislation, to legalize the cultivation of industrial hemp for industrial purposes.
The Minister explained that medical cannabis has been accepted for use in various countries and is administered under medical advice, to relieve the symptoms of multiple sclerosis and other neurodegenerative diseases, vomiting caused by chemotherapy, chronic pain and more. Mr. Petrides clarified that in no case cannabis is administered for healing of any disease.
Replying to a question by MP George Perdikis, the Health Minister said that the standards of medical cannabis differ greatly from the common hemp channeled through illegal trade. He also noted that currently in Cyprus there are no medicines licensed by the Medicine Council containing cannabis.
Mr. Petrides also said that with regard to the cultivation of hemp for industrial purposes, the Anti-Drugs Council recently decided to amend the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act to comply with the acquis communautaire to allow the cultivation of industrial hemp which contains less than 0.2% of the active ingredient Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol in dry mass.

Cannabis is the most popular illegal drug in Cyprus, said in a press conference the Head of the National Centre for Documentation and Information on Drugs Neoclis Georgiades.
However Georgiades noted that it is positive, that according to a recent research there is a dramatic increase in requests for treatment for cannabis and a reduction in the use of the drug in the general population.
At the same time he said that there is an increase in the over - consumption of alcohol among young people aged 15 - 16 years, namely six or more drinks each time.

Paphos police have arrested a 45-year-old Greek national on suspicion of cultivating cannabis plants, it was reported on Wednesday.
The man, who works as a cook, was picked up by the drug squad after three plants – the tallest being 30 centimetres — were found at his flat.
The suspect said the plants were for his own use, police said.
On Monday, Nicosia police arrested two 25-year-old men in connection with illegal possession and intent to sell banned substances.
At around 6.25pm, members of the Drug Squad stopped a car with two men inside and conducted a search of the vehicle.
Police said they found 84 grams of cannabis during the car search and an additional 16 grams and a pair of scales during a follow-up search of their homes.
The two men were yesterday being held for questioning.

A 37-year-old man from Greece was arrested after police found almost 15kg of cannabis in his luggage at around 10.30pm on Monday at Larnaca airport.
Acting on information that drugs were being imported into Cyprus, members of the drug squad cooperated with airport police to conduct searches on passengers’ luggage.
They allegedly found 14 kilos and 677 grams of cannabis in 12 nylon bags in the luggage of the 37-year-old of Russian origin who arrived at Larnaca from Athens.

CANNABIS is the most commonly used drug in Cyprus, with almost seven per
cent of the island’s population admitting to using it at least once.
The findings were announced by the Cyprus Monitoring Centre for Drugs
and Drug Addiction (EKTEPN), as part of its 2006 survey.
The Head of EKTEPN, Neoclis Georgiades, said men were more frequent drug
users than women.
Cyprus obtains one of the lowest percentages in the EU for the use of

The 65-year-old Greek Cypriot father of seven was allegedly growing 21 cannabis plants among lemon trees and fig trees, most reaching three metres tall.
The police reportedly arrested him while he was watering the plants. He said they were for his own personal use.

According to this article, US Attorney General Eric Holder has said that states will be allowed to make their own rules about medical marijuana, and that the US federal government will stop raiding medical marijuana dispensaries in California. In the 1990s, several US states passed referendums which allowed marijuana to be used legally for medical purposes. In a referendum, the registered voters vote directly on the proposed law, as opposed to the law being passed by the state legislature. Thus, when these states passed these referendums, it meant that the citizens of these states really wanted medical marijuana to be made legal.
However, in a blatant disregard for democracy and the people’s will, under the Bush administration, the national government refused to accept this law, and carried out raids of the medical marijuana dispensaries.

1. Since 1996, twelve states have legalized medical marijuana use: AK, CA, CO, HI, ME, MT, NV, NM, OR, RI, VT, and WA. Eight of the twelve did so through the initiative process. Hawaii's law was enacted by the legislature and signed by the governor in 2000, Vermont's was enacted by the legislature and passed into law without the governor's signature in May 2004, Rhode Island's was passed into law over the governor's veto in January 2006, and New Mexico's legislation was signed into law by Governor Bill Richardson on April 2, 2007.
