Hemp, cannabis, and medical cannabis in ancient Egypt.
From Ethan B. Russo, "History of Cannabis and Its Preparations in Saga, Science, and Sobriquet," Chemistry & Biodiversity 4, issue 8 (2007): 1614-1648:
Hemp fibers were found in the tomb of Amenophis IV (Akhenaten) at El-@Amarna, ca. 1350 b.c. and confirmed in two separate scientific analyses. Cannabis pollen has also been identified from mid-third-millennium b.c. soil samples from Nagada and in geological strata of similar vintage in the eastern Nile Delta.
More convincing yet is the finding of several pollen grains inside the mummy of Rameses II, who died ca. 1213 b.c. A photomicrograph (p. 163) seems to confirm this assignation, and not that of hops, Humulus lupulus, a European species not identified in Ancient Egypt. Samples containing cannabis pollen from another mummy has also been documented, ca. 100 b.c., during the Ptolemaic era.
Cannabis was used medicinally starting much earlier in Egypt. See the original Egyptian documents and translations:

Smoking tolerance level: (1-5) 3 ---
Legislation: Illegal to possess or consume marijuana, and very long jail time,
though the laws are not set in stone and will be dependant on the judge's ruling.
It's considerably hard to be caught with hash or weed within Cairo. There are no worries of cops if you happen to be driving down the road with a joint in hand as long as there are no road-blocks. Try and stay in secluded areas: apartements and hotel rooms are best. Many cops wont even bother you especially if you are a foreigner.
If you do get in a situation, show your Foreign Passport and speak in your national tongue, keep saying "embassy" and you probably will be left alone. Having a heavy load of weed or hash can however be rough. Jail is not the place you want to go in Egypt. And currently, police can hold you 24 hours beforeletting you see your embassy. So be cool, just as you would anywhere else.
Law enforcement: From place to place it varies but generally the police are ignorant and don't place a priority they are sensitive to marijuana as being criminal as culturally its somewhat acceptable and has the highest majority of pot heads in the arab world.
Though still take caution and dont place yourself in situations of needless risk.
another reporter added :"Local cops wont bother you, but as soon as you see clean white uniforms, sunglasses, and walkie talkies stay cool, these are the officers and are not so leniant.
Security guards in Hotels and such are unable to do anything so dont worry about them. They may complain but wont get you arrested, unless trouble is started. "
Where to buy marijuana: Like the rest of the middle east theres no seedy downtown alley or central park where dealers come up to you, though unlike the rest of the middle east asking someone usually yields good results, start some friendly chit chat with the locals and ask them to set you up, it should be fairly easy but be careful who you ask as some people are religious and will be offended.
Taxi Drivers, Tour Guides, (occasionally the police!) waiters , coffee shop staff and normal people sipping tea will be more than happy to set you up, egyptian people are extremely friendly and likable and will leap at the chance to have a conversation with a foriegner( dont be scared there not try to hustle you, there genuinely friendly, its not uncommon to get invited for lunch and to spend time with thier families!), just make sure you dont ask middle class people or women or religious scholars that wont yield anything.
Marijuana there is a drug for the poor, alcohol is seen as pre stigious and classy and notably unaffordble to the normal egyptian. though egypt in general is pretty easy to score in, take in mind egyptians think that all tourists are loaded with money and willl try their best to make u part with as much money as you can.
another reporter added: "It's easy to find weed or hash anywhere in Cairo but be cautious. Many-a-times have I gone to buy an irsh or 3 grams of hash, and come with amphetimines and other additives such as Ping spray, coffee, henna, camel shit, etc. Look for hash that is lighter brown and softer, prefferably maleable. Ask local taxi-drivers if no religious prayers are being blasted through the speakers, or see any religious symbols in the taxi. Waiters in shisha cafes (hookah/water pipe cafes) depending on the area and quality of establishment will be able to hook you up.
When in Cairo, go to Road 9 in Maadi, there is a hookah place near the Metro Station without a name or building. There are chairs outside around white tables, ask the waiter to take in order (english is fine anywhere in Maadi) ask for some Sheesha and tea or whatever you may want, when the waiter returns with your stuff ask him for something special or something "else" to smoke, dont be hesitant to
wink. "
Marijuana prices: Prices Vary greatly depending on your nationality, whites will be charged a fortune for whats relatively cheap! arabs blacks and brown colored people can expect to pay less yet still ripped off. Bargain it down and remeber in general its cheap and you should pay no more than 5USD for 10 grams of good stuff.
Also bring a bit of cheap liqour with you this can easily be traded for a good pile of marijuana , by doing this you avoid the pitfalls of being overcharged, and you get an excellent deal seeing as how u get more than the bottles worth in marijuana.
another reporter added:
"Regular Hash-100LE an irsh (coin) - 3 grams.
Better quality(i.e. morrocan, lebanese...)-120-150 an irsh- 3 grams;
Weed- 20LE for \"a paper\" 1/4 o.
Be careful about the weed as well, its not uncommon to have additives in it either.
If weed is what you desire, don\'t expect much. Ask for sudanese or morrocan even afghani. "
Brands:
Maroc Hash including red blonde and honey, as well as oil, Sudanese Bongo, Lebanese Red and Blonde.
And the local sinai weed though thats getting considerably hard to find nowadays.
another reporter added:
"Egyptian hash-hard, dark color.
Lebanese Blonde-light golden brown, softer;
Buscuit Hash \"biscoota\"-soft light brown;
Morrocan Black- black, clay-like.
Aim for light brown and soft most of the time unless dark and soft. Look for any imperfections in the middle of the peice after you break it. Look for color splotches, any foreign matter other than tricromes. If anything seems foreign DENY DENY DENY.
More information:
If you can find it go for the hash oil, potent and nowadays rarely found outside the middle east, and enjoy some bongo in the local shisha pipe (hookah).

Dahab | Smoking tolerance level: 3 ---
Where to buy marijuana: Generally in dahb, which is in sinai, you can buy the weed from the locals, especially the bedwins who are the growers of the plant. However for a smooth and chilled out experience, a place called ABU GALOUM is the place to be. ABU GALOUM is very primitive camp 5 km from DAHB city center, (the last 2 kms can only be made on foot, but it’s really amazing as you walk along side the beach with mountains from the other side) Upon reaching there, just relax and let the bedwins who are responsible for the camp, take care of everything.
For 10 $ you get a load of weed. if you don’t have ur rolling paper on you, the guys over there can set up the weed with the SHISHA (local egyptian name for water pipe). Great experience as you smoke on the beach or in one of the huts.
Dahab marijuana prices: Fairly cheep as they grown nearby.
Brands: locally grown weed, really good stuff.
>> Visit: http://webehigh.org/dahab-dahb-egypt/
Sharm Al Saikh | Smoking tolerance level: 3 ---
Legislation: Cops only harass locals at Sharm, all foreigners are treated like kings since they are the ones bringing in all the money. This doesn’t mean you can go and light in a policeman’s face, but once the towel boy at a resort I was staying at literally asked me for the rest of my joint. Smoke anywhere really except next to cops, anywhere at the resort, at the beach, in the club (even if the bouncers give you shit, 100 LE should do the trick).
Law enforcement: If the cops catch a foreigners he would most likely be let out the same day.
Where to buy marijuana: Taxis are the easiest hook up, worked both times I went simply by literally asking the first taxi I’d see.
Marijuana prices: An “irsh” is for 100 LE ($15), which is a a rectangular cube the size and width of a finger. A “fersha” which is a large brick the size and width of 2 CD cases put together is for 1500 LE ($225). Bongo is dirt cheap, most of the times you can probably get some for free when buying the hash but I don’t really see why anyone would want to.
Marijuana brands: The hash is Sharm is golden brown hash that is very stiff. I really liked the quality plus it was soo cheap that I had enough to be high all the time, smoking non-stop.
More information: Sharm is a very nice place to visit for a week, even for a stoner, its an Arabian tropical paradise.

Egyptian Weed - Cannabis
|
We were in Luxor last year - a quick chat with a Kalesh driver and weed was in our hands within 2 hours of landing... looked terrible when we unwrapped the finger sized paper - but ... whoa!!
You have to make sure you ask for the best stuff, otherwise it comes full of seeds and with some male plant .... but if you get a good Kalesh driver - ask him to be your driver for your stay (does not cost much), he will find you some of the best hash, and most intese rag-weed I have tried.... not quite to the Dutch standard - tastes a bit rough ... but buzzy as hell ...

Finally, the drug problem is coming to an end in Egypt. They are starting to arrest those who sell t-shirts that display weed leaves on them, for advocating drug use. That'll end drug addiction in Egypt. That'll show those drug dealers.
I think it has gotten really better in Egypt. Atleast I don't hear that much of those hardcore drugs in high circulation anymore, Cocaine and the like. Weed has become very popular instead, replacing that dangerous and highly addictive Cocaine stuff, which was consuming alot of our national income --really expensive stuff. So, druggies are getting smarter, and patriotic.
The cheap druggies go for Bango, that's the lousy kind of weed for those who want to make a cheap head. The guys with quality heads go for the more expensive Marijuana (Hashish). They're (weed) actually so popular, you can sometimes smell them while walking peacefully in any street in Cairo (and you were wondering what else you can do on Cairo streets).
... and btw, bango is bad in egypt because it is not cultivated correctly. The marijuana sold in egypt is what's known in the states as shwag, aka the worst

N.J. Senate approves medical marijuana bill -
Monday, December 15, 2008 |
TRENTON BUREAU:
A Senate committee today cleared a measure that would allow medical use of marijuana in New Jersey.
The Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee voted to approve the long-stalled bill by a 6 to 1 margin; two senators abstained.
The bill calls for creating “alternative treatment centers” where people with chronic and terminal diseases would be allowed access to marijuana. Supporters say marijuana is a viable treatment option to alleviate pain in many cases.
“It is the definition of basic human decency that we do whatever we can to ease the pain and suffering of people living with severe chronic and terminal diseases,” said bill sponsor Sen. Nicholas Scutari, D-Union.
“When all other avenues of currently-approved pain relief have been exhausted, we need to give doctors the freedom to prescribe medical marijuana to give their patients a measure of comfort and dignity in the face of their debilitating diseases. This bill is about the most humane, compassionate option for those state residents who have nowhere else to turn in managing their illnesses.”
If ultimately approved by the full Legislature and signed by Governor Corzine, New Jersey would be the 14th state to allow medical use of marijuana.

A new study entitled Marijuana Effectiveness as an HIV Self-Care Strategy, which was released this past weekend in Clinical Nursing Research, indicates that persons living with HIV/AIDS rate cannabis as more effective in treating the symptoms of anxiety, depression, fatigue, diarrhea, and neuropathy than other prescription and over the counter medications.
The study, which was conducted over a two year period and included 775 patients from the USA, Africa, and Puerto Rico, assessed the use of cannabis as a symptom management approach for anxiety, depression, fatigue, diarrhea, nausea, and peripheral neuropathy. 27% of survey participants reported using cannabis for medicinal purposes.
Researchers wrote that cannabis use “was rated slightly more effective than antidepressants for anxiety and depression, Imodium for diarrhea, [over the counter] (OTC) medications for fatigue, and anti-epileptics and OTC medications for neuropathy” while cannabis was rated “slightly less effective for nausea than either prescribed or OTC medications.” Authors concluded that cannabis “is perceived by users as at least as effective as prescribed medications in symptom management.”

US Government Says It Will Stop Interfering with Medical Marijuana |
According to this article, US Attorney General Eric Holder has said that states will be allowed to make their own rules about medical marijuana, and that the US federal government will stop raiding medical marijuana dispensaries in California. (See article “Can Marijuana Help Rescue California’s Economy?”at this link)
In the 1990s, several US states passed referendums which allowed marijuana to be used legally for medical purposes. In a referendum, the registered voters vote directly on the proposed law, as opposed to the law being passed by the state legislature. Thus, when these states passed these referendums, it meant that the citizens of these states really wanted medical marijuana to be made legal.
However, in a blatant disregard for democracy and the people’s will, under the Bush administration, the national government refused to accept this law, and carried out raids of the medical marijuana dispensaries.

EGYPTIAN MEDICINE -- 2,000 BC
>
By far the very vast majority of modern day Egyptologists agree that Medical Cannabis (Medical Marihuana) was used by the ancient Egyptians in their medicines. This is in contradiction to what was thought to be the case right up until the early 1930's. In fact, most pre-second world war books dealing with ancient Egypt medicines in general exclude any conversation on the subject.
This discrepancy arose because in the mid 19th Century (when decipherment of the Egyptian language was first made possible) not all of the medicines found in the ancient papyruses were readily identifiable. As Paul Ghalioungui, a senior medical professor at Cairo University writes:[1]
"The papyri contain an extremely rich material medica of which only a fraction has hitherto been identified. This has been done through the patient work of Egyptologists who, by studying finds in graves, hieroglyphic inscriptions where plants figure near their names, and late Coptic texts, have helped considerable in this still unfinished work of identification."
Thus, it took awhile (well into the mid 20th Century) until the use of Cannabis could positively be identified and confirmed.

Hemp was used for rope and sails as well as fine linens in ancient Egypt. Hemp rope was found in the eighteenth-dynasty tomb of Akhenaten (Amenophis IV) at El Amarna, including a three ply hemp cord in the hole of a stone and a large mat bound with hemp cords.
In the third century C.E. the Roman emperor Aurelian imposed a tax on Egyptian cannabis.
Cannais was first documented in Kemet (ancient Egyt) around 2000 B.C.E. to treat sore eyes and cataracts. According to Diodorus Siculus (a Sicilian Greek historian who lived from 90 to 21 B.C.E.) Egyptian women used cannabis as a medication to relieve sorrow and bad humour.
Cannabis is mentioned as a medication in the following ancient Egyptian medical texts: Ramesseum III Papyrus (1700 B.C.E.), Eber’s Papyrus (1600 B.C.E.), the Berlin Papyrus (1300 B.C.E.), and the Chester Beatty VI Papyrus (1300 B.C.E.). The Eber’s Papyrus is the oldest known complete medical textbook in existence. Most scholars believe that it is copy of a much earlier text, probably from around 3100 B.C.E.

Ancient Egypt And Cannabis - 420 Magazine

Egypt is one of the great ancient civilizations with a notably advanced medical system. There is ample evidence to support the use of Cannabis as a medicine in ancient Egypt, as indications for use and instructions for preparation are written in some of the oldest medical texts in existence. Although, the extent of Cannabis use in ancient Egypt is debatable. Cannabis has been detected in mummies in Egypt, along with cocaine and nicotine by archeologists but these findings were subjected to intense debate.
By the 9th and 10th century, Egyptian medicine became Islamic medicine. Despite Sharia law banning all intoxicants, the plant in "hashish form" continued to be used for its powerful medicinal qualities. The term for the plant and its products changed over time, adding another level of confusion, in Islamic medicine it was no longer referred to as "shemshemet" but instead was called "hashish, or shadanaj, the Royal grain."

Seshat, Egyptian Goddess of Wisdom, Knowledge ... and Cannabis?
| Seshat was the Ancient Egyptian goddess of wisdom, knowledge, and writing. She was seen as a scribe and record keeper, and her name means she who scrivens (i.e. she who is the scribe), and is credited with inventing writing. She also became identified as the goddess of architecture, astronomy, astrology, building, mathematics, and surveying.
Marvel and stare hard at the image to the right as you wonder how much intelligence and creativity this one goddess must have had to create all this knowledge…
Wait a second, is that a cannabis leaf above her head? It looks pretty clear to me that the marijuana leaf is part of her elevated state of consciousness as it floats above her head, while still being connected to her. Take a look at the Google images of Seshat out there.
Nug Magazine has a really deep and visually interesting theory on how cannabis played a meaningful role in Ancient Egyptian medicine, spirituality, and intellectual creativity. Another theory is the hemp leaf in Seshat’s emblem is unmistakable evidence that the ancient Egyptian rope-stretchers used hemp for their measuring cords.
What do you think?

History of medical cannabis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
|
The history of medical cannabis can be traced thousands of years.
Ancient Egypt |
The Ebers Papyrus (ca. 1550 BCE) from Ancient Egypt has a prescription for medical marijuana applied directly for inflammation.
The Ebers Papyrus (ca. 1550 BCE) from Ancient Egypt describes medical cannabis. Other ancient Egyptian papyri that mention medical cannabis are the Ramesseum III Papyrus (1700 BC), the Berlin Papyrus (1300 BCE) and the Chester Beatty Medical Papyrus VI (1300 BCE).
The ancient Egyptians even used hemp (cannabis) in suppositories for relieving the pain of hemorrhoids. Around 2,000 BCE, the ancient Egyptians used cannabis to treat sore eyes. The egyptologist Lise Manniche notes the reference to "plant medical cannabis" in several Egyptian texts, one of which dates back to the eighteenth century BCE.

Marijuana Use, Ancient Egypt and Cannabis >
Marijuana - The First Twelve Thousand Years - 1 |
There is also very little evidence that the Egyptians ever cultivated the plant during the time of the Pharaohs. Papyrus documents from ancient Egypt list the names of hundreds of drugs and their plant sources, but there is no unequivocal mention of marijuana in any of its forms.[56] While some scholars have contended that the drug smsm t, mentioned in the Berlin and Ebers papyri, is cannabis, this opinion is conjecture. No mummy has ever been discovered wrapped in fabric made from cannabis. In the ruins of El Amarna, the city of Akhenaton (the Pharaoh who tried to introduce monotheism to ancient Egypt),
archaeologists found a "three ply hemp cord" in the hole of a stone and a large mat bound with "hemp cords", but unfortunately they did not specify the type of hemp. Many different bast fibers were called hemp and no one can be certain that the fibers at El Amarna are cannabis, especially since Deccan hemp (Hibiscus cannabinus) grows in Egypt.[59]
The earliest unmistakable reference to cannabis in Egypt does not occur until the third century A.D., when the Roman emperor Aurelian imposed a tax on Egyptian cannabis. Even then, however, there was very little of the fiber in Egypt.

Studies have shown that patients with incurable pain have substantially benefited from the use of cannabis while avoiding the side effects of many FDA-approved drugs, Dr. Ethan Russo said in his lecture on medical marijuana last night.
Russo, who practiced clinical neurology with a specialty in child neurology, migraines and chronic pain in Minnesota for 20 years, gave a medical history of cannabis to a crowd of about 60 at Stockbridge Hall.
Russo said there are records that show that cannabis was used to reduce excessive menstrual bleeding as far back as ancient Egypt and 13th-century Italy. Medical texts claiming that cannabis diminishes menstrual cramping and bleeding have persisted until today. According to Russo, 51 percent of Australian women now reportedly use medicated cannabis to relieve cramping.

Cannabis Indica (now referred to as Cannabis sativa subsp. indica),[1] Fluid Extract, American Druggists Syndicate, pre-1937.
Medical cannabis, (commonly referred to as "Medical marijuana"), refers to the use of the Cannabis plant as a physician-recommended drug or herbal therapy, as well as synthetic THC and other cannabinoids. There are many studies regarding the use of cannabis in a medicinal context.[2][3]
Drug usage generally requires a prescription, and distribution is usually done within a framework defined by local laws. There are several methods for administration of dosage including vaporizing or smoking dried cannabis buds, drinking or eating cannabis extracts, and taking synthetic THC pills.[4][5] The comparible efficacy of these methods was the subject of an investigative study by the National Institutes of Health.[3]

Originally (1st Edition), this chapter was en-titled, "A short Graphical History of Medical Cannabis," and was intended mostly for use by newspaper reporters who needed a quick yet well-documented resource on the subject. However, (now looking back with 20-20 hindsight) this has proven to be a major mistake on our part.
The amount of Dis-Information on the subject is incredible; -- a quick survey of the internet shows that at least 90% of the websites (how shall we politely put it) simply don't have the facts straight. It appears to be that same old story; someone says something out of the top of her head. Someone else repeats it as if it was the gospel truth. Someone else puts it up on the internet, and everyone starts quoting it, etc.

History of the Medical Use of Marijuana
from the National Commission of Marijuana and Drug Abuse
see also: The History of the Intoxicant Use of Marihuana
From: Marihuana, A Signal of Misunderstanding, the Report of the US National Commission on Marihuana and Drug Abuse, 1972
The term "marihuana" is a word with indistinct origins. Some believe it is derived from the Mexican words for "Mary Jane"; others hold that "marihuana" comes from. the Portuguese word marigu-ano which means "intoxicant" (Geller and Boas, 1969: 14). This chapter outlines the many and varied uses of marihuana through history, and deals with its use in medicine and its use as an intoxicant.
The experience of the 1960's might lead one to surmise that marihuana use spreads explosively. The chronicle of its 3,000 year history, however, shows that this "explosion" has been characteristic only of the contemporary scene. The plant has been grown for fiber and as a source of medicine for several thousand years, but until 500 A.D. its use as a mind-altering drug was almost solely confined in India. The drug and its uses reached the Middle and Near East during the next several centuries, and then moved across North Africa, appeared in Latin America and the Caribbean, and finally entered the United States in the early decades of this century (Snyder, 1970: 129).
Meanwhile it had been introduced into European medicine shortly after the invasion of Egypt by Napoleon and had a minor vogue as an intoxicant for a time in France.
...
This historical survey of the medical uses of marihuana is introduced by abroad overview of its use, including brief notes on current and projected research, and then considers specific historical settings and circumstances in ancient China, moving on to Egypt, India, Greece, Africa, and the Western World.

Several years after the return of Napoleon's army from Egypt, cannabis became widely accepted by Western medical practitioners. Previously, it had had limited use for such purposes as the treatment of burns. The scientific members of Napoleon's forces were interested in the drug's pain relieving and sedative effects. It was used during, and to a greater extent, following his rule in France, especially after 1840 when the work of such physicians as O'Shaughnessy, Aubert-Roche, and Moreau de Tours drew wide attention to this drug.

Informational Guide on Medical Cannabis |
If you have ever heard of the song, “Lets Go Get Stoned,” as sung by Ray Charles or Joe Cocker, you know the lyrics were referring to getting high or using cannabis aka marijuana. This mind altering drug goes by other names as well; names such as weed, pot, joint, blunt, hash and mary jane are quite common among users. Cannabis is a plant that contains a chemical called cannabinoids or cannabinolidic acids.
Another substance that is found in cannabis is THC, or Tetrahydrocannabinol, which gives the users that “high” sensation. When speaking of marijuana, the actual substance used in creating the high feeling comes from the leaves and flowering tops of the cannabis plant. Marijuana is considered to be a schedule 1 controlled substance today, because of the THC, which can be highly potent, depending upon the concentration factor of the THC.

Proven : Cannabis is Safe Medicine
by Ian Williams Goddard | In reaction to medical cannabis access referendums on the ballots in Arizona and California, former presidents Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, and George Bush signed a letter stating that they "categorically oppose'' access to cannabis for its many proven therapeutic uses such as the prevention of blindness and epileptic seizures. Their chief concern was that legal medical access would send the message that cannabis is safe. The presidents can, however, lay their safety concerns to rest because the scientific literature overwhelmingly confirms that cannabis is both an effective and safe medicine.
The Cannabis Safety Profile. The journal PHARMACOLOGICAL REVIEWS reports that decades of research prove that, "Compared with legal drugs...marijuana does not pose greater risks." Yet based upon mortality statistics, we can safely conclude that cannabis is one of the safest medical drugs known, for, while prescription drugs, defined as safe by the FDA, kill up to 27,000 and aspirin up to 1,000 Americans per year, cannabis kills 0 per year. Examine the pros, cons, and controversies of marijuana as medicine! | Cannabis is still sending “signals of misunderstanding.”1-3 The result is an exaggeration of beneficial or deleterious effects as well as occasional intermixture of medical science with other moral categories. This book deals with health aspects of the cannabis plant and the cannabinoids while mainly factoring out societal aspects. Some authors refer to social topics that require discussion even within the bounds of a narrow handling of medicinal aspects.
