Since the ceasefires of 1994, which ended the extremes of violence, associated with Irelands so-called “troubles”, Belfast City Centre has developed an entertaining and varied nightlife. Most of the action takes place along the Golden Mile, which runs from Great Victoria Street to Queen’s University. Although the area known as the Cathedral Quarter is rapidly developing as an entertainment and leisure zone with new bars opening weekly and the development of a small but vibrant gay scene.
Drink is the drug of choice for most people in Belfast and there are numerous bars throughout the city centre catering for all tastes. The older bars in the city have a much better atmosphere and more authentic customers than the newer ones. Watch out for traditional music “sessions” which take place in various pubs on different nights of the week. The “session” is an informal get together of musicians most of whom are unpaid except for a few pints during the course of the evening. The best pubs for sessions are Maddens (Friday and Saturday), The John Hewitt (Wednesday and Sunday), and the Rotterdam (Monday and Tuesday). Sessions are usually advertised in the pubs and the musicians will keep people informed on where the next one is to be. Anyone who plays music is welcome to join in the session, visiting musicians take note.

Temple Bar is the night club district and hang around outside clubs and you will find people selling something but mainly on busy friday and saturdays! Moore Street has alot of African shops and some people sell grass. Id say its virtually impossible to find proper bud on the street unless your really lucky. The only other way is keep your eyes and nose open in smoking areas in pubs and see if you can get to any parties.

Dublin is the town that Guinness built. This capital city of over 1 million inhabitants on the Republic of Ireland’s eastern coast is commonly associated with Guinness, one of the world’s most famous beers.
An estimated 10 million glasses a day of Guinness stout, which boasts a black body and creamy tan head, pour out of taps in 150 countries. Established in 1759, Guinness’s home at St. James Gate in Dublin was at one time the largest brewery in the world and is still one of the city’s most famed tourist attractions. Thousands visit the brewery each year for a tour, followed by samples in the on-site pub. Whiskey is also well represented in old Eire.
“During my time in Dublin I found the Dubliners more interested in getting pissed [drunk] than getting high,” said Stuart Campbell, a Scotsman from Glasgow who visits Dublin a few times a year. But, he insisted, that does not mean recreational drugs such as Marijuana and Hash are unavailable. You only have to know where to look, he said, suggesting the Temple bar area as a likely spot for club drugs such as Ecstasy.
Paul, a Dublin resident who lives in the bustling area near Trinity College, said Hash and other soft drugs are “freely available in Dublin, but you have to know whom to ask for it.”
“It’s not a good idea just to ask random people in the street,” he said.
“The police, Garda, in the Republic prosecute all cases of possession. So does the Royal Ulster Constabulary [the police service of Northern Ireland],” he said. “So visitors are advised that this is a difference in attitudes between the police here and in places like Holland.”
Police statistics show that in 1998 the Garda National Drugs Unit confiscated 44,508 grams of Marijuana, 690 Cannabis plants, 798 tabs of L.S.D, 604,827 hits of Ecstasy MDMA, 4,419 tabs of Ephedrine, and 333,167 grams of Cocaine. Cusack explained that the police crackdown is intended to dismantle groups that have taken over drug distribution.

From time to time, the drug warriors come up with a real gem of a reason why we should all come to our senses and just stop it, already, with this "using cannabis" nonsense. I mean, come ON. Despite whatever perceived benefits, medical or otherwise, is it worth the huge risks?

Its difficult to come across reliable statistics regarding the number of people in Ireland who smoke cannabis. Apparently half of all 16 to 29 year olds have tried it at least once.
In spite of government warnings about health risks, many people see it as a harmless substance that helps you to relax and chill a drug that, unlike alcohol and cigarettes, might even be good for your physical and mental health. Even if you subscribe to this mode of thought, it is important to note that there is a body of research which has suggested that it can be a major cause of psychotic illnesses in those who are genetically vulnerable.

Cannabis sativa and cannabis indica are members of the nettle family that have grown wild throughout the world for centuries.
Both plants have been used for a variety of purposes including hemp to make rope and textiles, as a medical herb and as the popular recreational drug.
What is its legal status of cannabis? |
Its illegal. If you get caught, the arresting Garda will bring you to court and prosecute you. Its difficult to predict what the outcome of this will be as it generally depends on the disposition of the judge. You could get off with a fine, or find yourself on a lengthy probation bond with a lot of sticky conditions such as attendance at an addiction counsellor and frequent Urinalysis (Piss Test).
What tends to catch a lot of people out is that it doesnt matter what you paid for it, if a Garda places a high value on it, or reckons theres enough there to nail you for sale and supply, youre up shit creek and such.

Many perhaps most people who use cannabis do enjoy it. But it can become a problem for some people. A US organisation, marijuana-anonymous.org, defines the problems of cannabis as follows:

The current legal position in relation to Cannabis in the Republic of Ireland is that it is a scheduled substance under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977. This means that if you are caught with any amount,however small,you can be prosecuted and fined.It is also an offence to grow cannabis plants and on summary conviction for this offence, you could be liable for a fine not exceeding €1,270 or a prison sentence of up to 12 months However if the court deems that you had the cannabis in your possession with the intent of supplying it,the punishments are much more severe. Where the market value of the drugs is €13,000 or more (are vastly inflated police price estimations)the person convicted is liable for a minimum sentence of a shocking 10 years.
In January 2006 it seemed as if those caught with small amounts for personal use would be handed a caution rather than put thought the courts but this plan was dropped at the 11th hour by the infamous ex-Minister for Injustice Michael McDowell. So as you can see the legal situation for cannabis enthusiasts in Ireland is not pretty.The current centre-right Government is extremely unlikely to make any change without serious pressure being exerted upon them and this pressure is unlikely to come form the pathetic opposition political parties, none of whom have had the courage to come out in support of legalisation. So it'll have to be people power once again!
Last Years March | Legalise Cannabis Ireland was founded almost a year and a half ago following several years of sporadic attempts at highlighting the fallacy that is this prohibition of cannabis. Virtually the only public Cannabis action comprised of J-Days , annual mass smoke-ups in a park.
A few took place in Ireland's Capital city, Dublin but following an initial flourish, attendances were dwindling. Only a small crowd assembled in 2006 at the aptly named Marlay Park,the gathering thereafter interrupted by a nasty bunch of Gardai (Irish police) who proceeded to demand all kinds of silly information from the innocent afternoon tokers., some of whom were arrested.

With that in mind, the decision was taken to organise the first ever Anti-Prohibition march to on these shores, to be held the 6th of May 2007, the same weekend as the Worldwide Marijuana March across the rest of the globe. With that, the wheels began to turn on the wagon of a new movement, eventually to be christened Legalise Cannabis Ireland.
An interesting mix of people came together to take on the donkey-work of getting a campaign up and running A healthy concoction of experience, nationality and gender proved productive as the ideas began to flow. With the help of supportive Head, Hemp and Grow Stores, the campaign produced a number of well-designed, informative and accessible leaflets on topics such as medical use, the problems caused by prohibition, as well as the scourge of contaminated cannabis, a problem of particularly great magnitude in Ireland.

The main issuse of cannabis is the miss information. For those of you who say how bad it is and my friend did this and that.. is bull. In my opinion, cannabis is not addictive, yes there can be a want for it but it is extremely easy to ignore and what they do on it is them as a person.
I would like to know who here that is against it have actually read, and looked at what the drug is, does and its side effects etc, other than what the govenment said.
Please if you think you have looked at all the facts unbiasedly I would be interesed in talking about this. I am looking to get it legalised (please email me if you wish to be involved) but by actually letting people see the facts.

Of course it should be legal, the only reason it isn't is because of political reasons. A load of old biddies that listen to Joe Duffy will be up in arms if its legalised. I was caught with a lump of hash by the police and they didn't even take it off me. They just told me to have a good night!

no it should never be legalised. its too dangerous for any one to use. just see how people behave, what goes on in their head i don't want to know. but they act so strange. not all do all the time, i know a lot who use it. they start of with an odd joint, then it gets a lot more. what use are they when they are really hooked, no use to any one or society.

A Senate committee today cleared a measure that would allow medical use of marijuana in New Jersey.
The Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee voted to approve the long-stalled bill by a 6 to 1 margin; two senators abstained.
The bill calls for creating “alternative treatment centers” where people with chronic and terminal diseases would be allowed access to marijuana. Supporters say marijuana is a viable treatment option to alleviate pain in many cases.
“It is the definition of basic human decency that we do whatever we can to ease the pain and suffering of people living with severe chronic and terminal diseases,” said bill sponsor Sen. Nicholas Scutari, D-Union.
“When all other avenues of currently-approved pain relief have been exhausted, we need to give doctors the freedom to prescribe medical marijuana to give their patients a measure of comfort and dignity in the face of their debilitating diseases. This bill is about the most humane, compassionate option for those state residents who have nowhere else to turn in managing their illnesses.”
If ultimately approved by the full Legislature and signed by Governor Corzine, New Jersey would be the 14th state to allow medical use of marijuana.

A new study entitled Marijuana Effectiveness as an HIV Self-Care Strategy, which was released this past weekend in Clinical Nursing Research, indicates that persons living with HIV/AIDS rate cannabis as more effective in treating the symptoms of anxiety, depression, fatigue, diarrhea, and neuropathy than other prescription and over the counter medications.
The study, which was conducted over a two year period and included 775 patients from the USA, Africa, and Puerto Rico, assessed the use of cannabis as a symptom management approach for anxiety, depression, fatigue, diarrhea, nausea, and peripheral neuropathy. 27% of survey participants reported using cannabis for medicinal purposes.
Researchers wrote that cannabis use “was rated slightly more effective than antidepressants for anxiety and depression, Imodium for diarrhea, [over the counter] (OTC) medications for fatigue, and anti-epileptics and OTC medications for neuropathy” while cannabis was rated “slightly less effective for nausea than either prescribed or OTC medications.” Authors concluded that cannabis “is perceived by users as at least as effective as prescribed medications in symptom management.”

Whilst the rest of the world starts to get a grip on the whole 'cannabis' thing, the United Kingdom is stuck somewhere between the dark ages and nowhere, showing 'a weak administration devoid of any new ideas' according to drug reform advocates.
In the Republic of Ireland for instance its been announced the government intends to make cannabis available by prescription.
As is often the case with cannabis news, the official press release was somewhat more ambiguous, stating according to The Independent newspaper 'the government is 'considering proposals' to make cannabis medicines available by prescription'.
The Department of Health is said to be mulling over the proposal, but from past experiences what it will all boil down to is how much money can the government and the pharmaceutical industry collectively earn from such a move whilst at the same time stopping people spending just a few euros at the garden centre and growing their own tax free medicine in the garden.

Irishman Gordon McArdle knows the Californian health system well. He operated a medical marijuana dispensary in Napa Valley and later on was prescribed medicinal marijuana, or cannabis, for post-traumatic stress disorder which he continues to use for the condition.
Now living in Dublin, Gordon (36) is conscious of the disparity between the drug laws in California and Ireland, where any use of the drug is completely illegal, even for the relief of pain and other chronic conditions.
He is also at the forefront of a campaign which those involved hope will one day see people here taking the drug, free from the fear of arrest or prosecution.

DEPARTMENT of Health officials have been instructed by the Department of Justice to enact an EU agreement which allows people to carry legally prescribed narcotic or psychotropic drugs for medical use.
The move comes after Galway man Noel McCullagh, who uses a cannabis- based drug for multiple sclerosis, sought a guarantee that he wouldn’t be arrested for bringing it into the country.
McCullagh, however, lost his bid as the European ombudsman who said, although he was "deeply touched" by the case, had not found a breach of European law in the matter.
Mental Health campaigner John McCarthy who is suffering from motor neuron disease and uses cannabis to manage his pain and treat spasticity in his muscles said it is a disgrace that people cannot get proper advice on the matter.
"It is awful that people have to rely on supplies from friends, they don’t know where it came from, what it contains, how much to take and can’t get any advice on the matter legally."
Mr McCarthy said he has been getting at least one phone call a week since an Irish Examiner article last December, describing how he can get out of his wheelchair and walk short distances since he began taking small amounts of cannabis.
"These are people who are looking for a way out from pain and are afraid not of cannabis but of the law," he said. "It is complete nonsense that you have to become a criminal to take something which will relieve painful symptoms and give a better quality of life."

HERBAL cannabis on sale in Ireland is now up to eight times stronger than it was a decade ago, an addiction expert has said.
Skunk is more potent than the more common cannabis resin, and the evidence is the varieties coming to Ireland are getting stronger. Shay Pegley of the Addiction Training Institute said cannabis was still Ireland’s “number one drug of choice”.
Mr Pegley said he was “not surprised” by the skunk seizures made in recent months.
“What is available now seems to be a lot more potent than it was 10 years ago,” Mr Pegley said.
“Some reports would put it at between five and eight times stronger than it was. Skunk poses new dangers in terms of exposing latent psychological issues like paranoia and schizophrenia.”
That’s odd, because this 2004 report from the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction states:
Today’s study reveals that when the overall potency of cannabis products available on the European market is calculated, there is no evidence of a significant increase in potency. This is because, in most EU countries, imported cannabis (herbal and resin) dominates the market and this has remained stable over many years.
Today’s report shows that effective potency of cannabis in nearly all EU countries has remained quite stable for many years, at around 6–8% THC.

There have been several very important developments on the Irish medical cannabis front over the past few weeks, which have led many to believe that Ireland could be set to legalize medicinal marijuana within two years.
The first significant development happened on September 10, when Ireland's Minister for Health, Mary Harney, said she would be "open" to legalizing cannabis for medical purposes. Harney said she would get expert opinions on the matter, with a view to making a decision on the issue by the end of the year, reports Daniel O'Carroll at Irish Central.
This in itself represents huge progress from the old days, when government authorities said they would not consider the idea of legalizing cannabis for any purpose.
That hopeful note was followed shortly after by a meeting between Gordon McArdle, one of Ireland's most prominent cannabis advocates, and Minister Pat Carey, the man in charge of the country's drug policies.

Could Ireland legalize medical marijuana?
Despite the story having been pushed out of the Irish media limelight by the Brian Cowen 'Gargle-gate' fiasco, there have been several very important movements in the Irish medical cannabis question over the past few weeks, which have led many to believe that Ireland could be set to legalize medical cannabis within a couple of years.
The first significant development took place on the 10th of September, just over 10 days ago, when Ireland's Minister for Health, Mary Harney, said that she would be 'open' to the question of medical marijuana and would solicit expert opinion on the matter with a view to making a decision on the issue by the end of the year. This was in itself a huge jump from days previous, when the Tanaiste had explicitly told the Oireachtas that she would not consider the idea of legalizing cannabis in any form.

Ireland is a country that is famous for drinking, but like everywhere else in the world, Cannabis Nation has a toehold in the Emerald Isle. While one may not expect to find marijuana reformers and activists in Ireland, it seems that no matter where you go in the world someone wants to end prohibition and Ireland is no different. While Irish culture may differ from that of the US or even England, the marijuana laws are similar, and there are marijuana reformers in Ireland with the same goals and solutions to prohibition that we have here in the States.
Under the Misuse of Drugs Act of 1977 and 1984, marijuana is considered an illegal substance in Ireland. However, the Irish police, An Garda Siochana, distinguish between possession for personal use and possession for sale or supply. Possession of cannabis or cannabis resin is treated less severely than other drugs. The punishment for the first and second conviction of cannabis possession is a fine and after the third conviction, a fine and up to three years in prison. The penalties for possession or trafficking of hard drugs are stiffer.
There are political parties supporting legalization in Ireland, but most of those in favor are hesitant to vocalize their support. For example, Sinn Fein and the Greens, left-of-center parties, rarely mention cannabis. CCPR will be targeting these parties, encouraging them to speak up. CCPR's cannabis/alcohol equalization initiative may educate some politicians who weren't aware of the facts, and hopefully over the coming months the Initiative will be discussed in detail.

Ireland's Minister for Health, Mary Harney, has said she is open to legalizing cannabis for medicinal purposes.
Harney has sought legal advice on the effectiveness of marijuana for the treatment of such conditions as multiple sclerosis and certain forms of cancer, reports Ronan McGreevy at the Irish Times.
The Department of Health and Children, in a statement, said it would contact relevant experts in the field with a view to making a recommendation to the Minister by the end of the year.
Harney said in a parliamentary question last year that she did not propose a change in the law that would allow cannabis to be used for medicinal purposes.
The department stressed there was "no question" of the Minister completely legalizing cannabis itself.

US Government Says It Will Stop Interfering with Medical Marijuana |
According to this article, US Attorney General Eric Holder has said that states will be allowed to make their own rules about medical marijuana, and that the US federal government will stop raiding medical marijuana dispensaries in California. (See article “Can Marijuana Help Rescue California’s Economy?”at this link)
In the 1990s, several US states passed referendums which allowed marijuana to be used legally for medical purposes. In a referendum, the registered voters vote directly on the proposed law, as opposed to the law being passed by the state legislature. Thus, when these states passed these referendums, it meant that the citizens of these states really wanted medical marijuana to be made legal.
However, in a blatant disregard for democracy and the people’s will, under the Bush administration, the national government refused to accept this law, and carried out raids of the medical marijuana dispensaries.

1. Since 1996, twelve states have legalized medical marijuana use: AK, CA, CO, HI, ME, MT, NV, NM, OR, RI, VT, and WA. Eight of the twelve did so through the initiative process. Hawaii's law was enacted by the legislature and signed by the governor in 2000, Vermont's was enacted by the legislature and passed into law without the governor's signature in May 2004, Rhode Island's was passed into law over the governor's veto in January 2006, and New Mexico's legislation was signed into law by Governor Bill Richardson on April 2, 2007.
