There are a number of medical cannabis (marijuana) bills in play in states across the US. Here we network on Ways and Means anyone can help with the effort to make each a medical marijuana state.
We need to get the word out and people contacting reps and officials and get this legislation into law. Also, lets not forget efforts at the Federal level.
NETWORK and Spread The Word, both On-Line and Off (!) ON-LINE, You can tell everybody in cyber-space by e-mailing a link to this website to them and/or (OFF-LINE> printing off the info and handing out where possible / necessary. Also phone call and read off and/or visit and hand deliver the info. You can take literature with you and approach businesses, organizations and even people on the street while you're out and about. Wear your pot-leaf shirt and register voters, as feasible. Gather signatures for any related petitions that are happening at the time as well.
This is a chain e-mail you can't refuse. Unlike most, this will actually help you - and a whole buncha others - just by passing it on.
Cannabis consumer or not - from the folks just trying to take care of themselves or a loved one to those who simply see the expensive, immoral waste of making war on the sick and dying - everyone is affected by this issue.
To accomplish this you need to first click on the following links and send a message to all the reps and media you can on the issue.
Then get everybody else to do the same. And follow up.
To do this you need to tell everybody you know.
And can confide in.
Then/or anonymously tell everybody you don't know
- or can't confide in. Yet.
Tell everybody else by Letters-to-the-Editor, displaying signage at street corners and over-passes (wear trenchcoat, fedora and sunglasses if afraid of exposure), and/or anonymously leaving literature and posting on-line at places where people are likely to find it.

Inform, Educate, Activate
INFORM and EDUCATE. Distribute medical marijuana brochures and other literature to your friends, family, local leaders and elected officials in an effort to educate the public and garner support. Educate your community by Printing, posting and handing out Flyers and other Printables in a mall, coffee shop, laundromat, college campus, lamp post, telephone poll, business window (ask first), hospital, or anywhere people will see them. OUTREACH and Gather TESTIMONY. Ask your doctor, clergy member, local leader, or organization you are a member of to sign a statement of principle. One way to get that done is to download MPPs medical marijuana statement of principle, print it out, and ask your doctor or other individual to sign it the next time you have the opportunity. BROADCAST and PUBLICIZE. Help get the word out by downloading and sharing MPP's public service announcements with radio stations in your area. If you're a talk radio listener, call in and express support for medical marijuana laws. For example, if the issue is health care, you can point out that treatment decisions are better off being left to patients and physicians than police and prosecutors.

Multiple places have decriminalized non-medical cannabis in the United States; however, cannabis is illegal under federal law. Gonzales v. Raich (2005) held in a 6-3 decision that the Commerce Clause of the United States Constitution allowed the federal government to ban the use of cannabis, including medical use even if local laws allow it.
Most places that have decriminalized cannabis have civil fines, drug education, or drug treatment in place of incarceration and/or criminal charges for possession of small amounts of cannabis, or have made various cannabis offenses the lowest priority for law enforcement.

Kentucky governor and House speaker express support for medical marijuana, but legislature fails to act in 2016

At long last, the stars may be aligning for Kentucky to take a serious look at allowing medical marijuana. Medical marijuana efforts got a big boost in 2015 when House Speaker Greg Stumbo (D-Prestonsburg) announced that he would sponsor a medical marijuana bill for the 2015 session. Then, on Election Day, voters elected Matt Bevin as governor after medical marijuana became a campaign issue. Bevin acknowledged “there is unequivocal medical evidence” that medical marijuana is beneficial while his opponent was dismissive.
In 2016, legislators in both the House and Senate introduced medical marijuana legislation, but the legislature adjourned without taking action. In July, the Interim Joint Committee on Occupations and Licensing held a public hearing in order to learn more about the issue. If you live in Kentucky, write your legislators and urge them to support an effective medical marijuana bill when the legislature reconvenes in 2017.

In 2016, Sen. Perry Clark introduced SB 13, a bill that would end marijuana prohibition for adults in the Commonwealth and create a regulated and taxed system. The legislature adjourned without taking action on the bill.

Lawmakers pass, governor signs limited CBD bill

On Thursday, April 10, 2014, Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear signed into law a proposal that is intended to allow patients to use cannabidiol (“CBD,” a non-psychoactive component of marijuana) if directed by a physician. The new law went into effect immediately with his signature, but it is extremely unlikely it will actually result in patients being able to access CBD.
Despite concerns about access, and the fact that this legislation excludes the vast majority of medical marijuana patients, it is still a positive step forward.

Kentucky Senate Approves Bill Allowing Medical Marijuana Oil;
Cannabidiol oil will now be available to treat childhood epilepsy.

Kentucky this week moved closer to allowing the use of derivatives such as oil of hemp and marijuana for medicinal purposes. It's not a comprehensive medical marijuana bill like those that exist in 22 states and D.C., but it's the compassionate use device has epilepsy advocates thrilled.
Sponsored by Republican Sen. Julie Denton, the bill specifically designates drugs used in FDA-approved studies or compassionate use programs as exempt from the definition of marijuana. It also classifies the substance cannabidiol, when "recommended by a physician practicing at a state research hospital," as exempt.
Cannabidiol oil, or CBD, has been shown to have antiseizure properties and has been successfully used to treat seizures in children in several cases who suffer from Dravet syndrome, a life-threatening illness for which pharmaceutical drugs are often ineffective. The most well-known case is that of seven-year-old Charlotte Figi, who went from 300 grand mal seizures a day to two or three incidents per month after using the oil. The strain of cannabis used to treat the girl is high in CBD and low in the mind-altering compound THC, and has since been nicknamed "Charlotte's Web." A similar case was documented in TakePart earlier this month.
Cannabis is classified by federal law as a Schedule I substance, making it a crime to possess any amount of it. But the Justice Dept. has said it will defer to state law in cases of medical marijuana, even though federal law trumps state law under the supremacy clause of the U.S. Constitution.
Seizures are common in individuals with autism spectrum disorders. Interestingly, these individuals also have an increased number of cannabinoid receptors, according to a November 2013 study published in the Journal of Autism and Development Disorders. The study's data indicates that the receptors were found as potential therapeutic targets for the pharmalogical management of autism care.
Last month Rita Wooten, the Kentucky mother of a toddler plagued by seizures, spoke before the Kentucky Senate Health and Welfare Committee in support of the bill.

KY Senator pushes for medical marijuana legalization

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- 20 states and D.C. have legalized medical marijuana. Now a Kentucky state senator is ready to bring a bill to the table.
Jaime Montalvo was arrested in 2011 for growing marijuana, but he says he's not a criminal. He suffers from multiple sclerosis and uses the drug to ease his pain.
"I never really feared the prosecution up until the time it happened. It helped muscles spasms, it helped me sleep," said Montalvo.
He says the benefits outweighed the legal consequences. Now, he's fighting to legalize the drug for medical purposes in the state of Kentucky.
Montalvo says, "Thousands of the people that do support it are afraid to come out and support because of the same problems I have, they don't want to be arrested for it, they don't want to loose their children, they don't want to lose their jobs."
"You ask yourself a question, is cannabis medicine? Yes or no are the only two answers, and the answer is yes," said Kentucky Senator Perry Clark.
Senator Clark has introduced a compassionate care bill twice before. He's hoping the third times a charm.
"We are moving in the correct direction, we have a lot of people who were adamantly opposed to us three years ago that have seen a lot of evidence," said Clark.
But people are concerned about what really happens when state legislature legalizes medical marijuana.
Martin Cothran is the senior policy analyst at The Family Foundation. He says he witnessed it first hand in California.
Cothran says, "They're passing out cards saying that you can get medical marijuana for things as trivial as jet lag and stress."
He says we don't need to fuel the fire of drug abuse, and legalizing medical marijuana should not be a priority.
"This is a controversial piece of legislation what we really do need is something like tax reform but these other proposals out there, medical marijuana, expanded gambling, all these issues are going to suck the political oxygen out of the air and its going to detract from things we need to do," said Cothran.
But Montalvo would tell you differently, he says legalization would help him live a better life.

Hawaii's law was enacted by the legislature and signed by the governor in 2000, Vermont's was enacted by the legislature and passed into law without the governor's signature in May 2004, Rhode Island's was passed into law over the governor's veto in January 2006, and New Mexico's legislation was signed into law by Governor Bill Richardson on April 2, 2007.

Mission: To raise awareness and support for the legalization of medical marijuana in Kentucky.
The Veterans Administration has approved medical marijuana for patients at VA clinics located in states where medical marijuana is legal.
We feel, as citizens of this Common Wealth and many of us veterans, that Kentucky, with it's long proud history of hemp cultivation, should be the front runner and support legalizing Medical Marijuana.

At Kentuckians for Medicinal Marijuana, our mission is to educate the citizens of Kentucky on the benefits of medical marijuana (also known as “cannabis,” the scientific name for the plant). We are here to unite like-minded people and to help pass a medical marijuana law that will benefit our state’s sick and disabled citizens.
20 states and the District of Columbia have passed laws allowing medical marijuana if recommended by a physician. We strongly believe Kentucky should become one of the next states to protect patients who could benefit from medical marijuana!
