Action in Iowa
ACTION; Get involved in the movement for safe and legal access to medical cannabis today. Our power comes from our collective action. Whether it's calling Congress, attending rallies, organizing a local activity or chapter, signing an online petition, or supporting federal defendants, take action today!
There are a number of medical cannabis (marijuana) bills in play in states across the US. Here we network on Ways and Means anyone can help with the effort to make each a medical marijuana state.
We need to get the word out and people contacting reps and officials and get this legislation into law. Also, lets not forget efforts at the Federal level.
NETWORK and Spread The Word, both On-Line and Off (!) ON-LINE, You can tell everybody in cyber-space by e-mailing a link to this website to them and/or (OFF-LINE> printing off the info and handing out where possible / necessary. Also phone call and read off and/or visit and hand deliver the info. You can take literature with you and approach businesses, organizations and even people on the street while you're out and about. Wear your pot-leaf shirt and register voters, as feasible. Gather signatures for any related petitions that are happening at the time as well.
This is a chain e-mail you can't refuse. Unlike most, this will actually help you - and a whole buncha others - just by passing it on.
Cannabis consumer or not - from the folks just trying to take care of themselves or a loved one to those who simply see the expensive, immoral waste of making war on the sick and dying - everyone is affected by this issue.
To accomplish this you need to first click on the following links and send a message to all the reps and media you can on the issue.
Then get everybody else to do the same. And follow up.
To do this you need to tell everybody you know.
And can confide in.
Then/or anonymously tell everybody you don't know
- or can't confide in. Yet.
Tell everybody else by Letters-to-the-Editor, displaying signage at street corners and over-passes (wear trenchcoat, fedora and sunglasses if afraid of exposure), and/or anonymously leaving literature and posting on-line at places where people are likely to find it.
Coffeeshops are good places to leave printed material and you can go to the websites of the local newspapers to post items as well. More ideas and supporting tools via the links below.
Inform, Educate, Activate
INFORM and EDUCATE. Distribute medical marijuana brochures and other literature to your friends, family, local leaders and elected officials in an effort to educate the public and garner support. Educate your community by Printing, posting and handing out Flyers and other Printables in a mall, coffee shop, laundromat, college campus, lamp post, telephone poll, business window (ask first), hospital, or anywhere people will see them. Contact these groups for some.
If you or your Organization is doing the same, please Post It or give us Feed Back.

You can also print and hand out MPP's medical marijuana brochures to your friends, family, local leaders and elected officials in an effort to educate the public and garner support.
OUTREACH and Gather TESTIMONY. Ask your doctor, clergy member, local leader, or organization you are a member of to sign a statement of principle. One way to get that done is to download MPPs medical marijuana statement of principle, print it out, and ask your doctor or other individual to sign it the next time you have the opportunity. Then send it to MPP at P.O. Box 77492, Washington, D.C. 20013.
And TESTIFY. If you are a patient or caregiver that could benefit from such a law and would like to help advance legislation by sharing your story with others. Call in to radio, TV and other media; write LTEs and contact you legislators. These groups are helping with this activity:

If you're a talk radio listener, call in and express support for medical marijuana laws. Even if the subject being discussed isn't explicitly about marijuana, many related issues can be a springboard for urging reform. Smoking tolerance level [1= very illegal 5=virtually legal]: 2 ---
Legislation: By Iowa law, the possession of any amount of marijuana is a misdemeanor, punishable by up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $1,000. For a second offense the penalties increase to up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $1,500. Subsequent offenses are punishable by up to two years and a fine of $500 – $5,000. There is the possibility for conditional discharge for possession charges.
Possession within 1,000 feet of a school, public park, swimming pool or recreation center adds an additional 100 hours of community service to the sentence.
Law Enforcement: Cedar Rapids seems to have a lot of police rolling around and always looking for people doing something “wrong”.
Where to buy marijuana in Cedar Rapids: Your best bet to find something is to know someone who is sells weed. If you’re a tourist your best bet would probably in the Wellington Heights area which can be iffy safety wise (a lot of gangstaish people) or around the Kirkwood Community College campus or Coe College campus, your best would be to ask around at a bar in the area of the campus’.
Working class community, mostly swag, your best bet to find dank nugs would be to either know someone or go south to iowa city
Marijuana brands in Cedar Rapids: Most bricky swag but every once and a while some of your better strains with their outrageous names.

Smoking tolerance level [1= very illegal 5=virtually legal]: 2 ---
Marijuana Laws in Des Moines:
By Iowa law, the possession of any amount of marijuana is a misdemeanor, punishable by up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.
In 2014 Iowa legalized the use of CBD to be prescribed by doctors to children with epilepsy and people with serious diseases. However, only low THC/high CBD concentrates are allowed and the Iowa courts refused to allow marijuana to be manufactured in Iowa. So basically these idiots have given parents a way to help their children but must break federal laws by going to a medical state to obtain it and transporting over state lines.
Law Enforcement:
Law enforcement is very light for the most part, and most times driving around the cops won’t bother you. If you get pulled over and have bud on you, normally if you act cool they will just let you go.
However the suburb of Windsor Heights is an area you should know about, the police here are known to pull people over for less than 5mph over the speed limit. It is a small area, but if you travel from West Des Moines, Urbandale, or Waukee to the city of Des Moines there is a chance you could pass through this neighborhood. Here is Windsor Heights on google maps.
Cops here will target the youth and likely attempt to search your vehicle or call a K9 unit, even though they operate unlawfully it is not worth having to go to court, because these cops will take you to jail for having the smallest pipe or stem and have no remorse. If you are of color (black/latino) or you drive a suspicious or older vehicle don’t even think about coming through on a weekend night because you will be profiled and targeted.
A recent report is: “much worse than previously reported. des moines cops can be pretty chill but suburbs (urbandale, windsor heights, johnston, west des moines, clive) are all horrible.”
Where to buy marijuana in Des Moines:
Older advice suggested going to MLK Dr. however this has become a lot more shadier than it used to be. You probably won’t score dank here and most likely will be ripped off. You most likely need a connection.
You might be lucky meeting someone at the bars on Court Ave or at any concerts or events. Smokers can be seen at the disc golf courses if the weather is nice, as there are probably 10 within a half-hour of Des Moines. Recently the suburb of Ankeny went viral when an officer tried to trick a kid into consenting to search his car because he had a disc golf bag. Video Here
To sum it up you must know someone to get a legit hookup, or be social and meet them. You could drive around the city all day looking for people and not find anyone who knows where to get anything. East/South/North side can have some sketchy neighborhoods, but just avoid Windsor Heights.
Another reporter added: “don’t buy around here, especially near mlk parkway as stated before, everyone will rip you off, just tonight I came home $42 short”
Marijuana prices in Des Moines:
For anything considered dank you should expect to pay $20/g, $60/8th, $300+/oz. If you have a hookup $50/8th is more common and maybe even cheaper. Most bud you get people will say its from California or Colorado. Due to Colorado being a halfs day drive you can definitely find all the wax, hashes, and signature strains but also the typical no-name dank and homegrown stuff.
Schwag and mids is of course still around, the bud in Des Moines has its ups and downs. Most of the time its some pretty decent stuff.
More information:
Most of the time you are only going to get what your looking for around here if you have a connection you know.

Law enforcement: cops don’t go out of their way to bust somebody smoking pot. If you’re smart about what you’re doing, they will leave you be. BUT, if you give them reason to stop you and then they find weed on you… they probably won’t let you go. It does happen on occasion, though.
Where to buy marijuana: Pretty much anywhere in the city, espically on the west and northsides.
Marijuana prices: 7g=$20
14g=$30-$50
oz=$60-$90
Marijuana brands: Mostly cheap swag.

Places that have decriminalized non-medical cannabis in the United States -
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia |
Multiple places have decriminalized non-medical cannabis in the United States; however, cannabis is illegal under federal law. Gonzales v. Raich (2005) held in a 6-3 decision that the Commerce Clause of the United States Constitution allowed the federal government to ban the use of cannabis, including medical use even if local laws allow it.
Most places that have decriminalized cannabis have civil fines, drug education, or drug treatment in place of incarceration and/or criminal charges for possession of small amounts of cannabis, or have made various cannabis offenses the lowest priority for law enforcement.

Iowa families push for medical marijuana access
-
Last update: October 21, 2016
|
In 2015-2016, Iowa patient advocates and their loved ones kept up the pressure to bring a compassionate medical marijuana program to their state. They have not yet prevailed, but it’s not unusual for medical marijuana campaigns to be multi-year efforts, so it’s vital that compassionate Iowans get involved and raise their voices.
The 2015 session saw the Iowa Senate vote 26-19 in support of a compassionate and comprehensive medical marijuana proposal!
The bill would have allowed Iowans suffering from a variety of debilitating conditions — including HIV/AIDS, cancer, MS, and epilepsy — to use and safely access medical marijuana with their doctors’ recommendations. Unfortunately, despite popular support for the proposal, the House failed to debate the issue in 2015. In 2016, it appeared the issue had a real chance of success, but ultimately House leadership pushed for a deeply problematic proposal that would have required families to travel out of state to access medical cannabis oils.

If you are a Hawkeye, please email your lawmakers and ask them to support a compassionate medical marijuana program in 2017. You can let them know an April 2015 Quinnipiac poll found that 87% of Iowans support the legalization of marijuana for medical use!
Are you a medical professional, patient, law enforcement official, or member of the clergy?

If you are supportive and are a medical professional, a seriously ill patient who might benefit from medical marijuana, a law enforcement official, a clergy member, or a member of the legal community, or you know someone else who is, please email state@mpp.org to see how you can be of special help. Please include your address or nine-digit ZIP code.

Learn more about Iowa’s marijuana laws
|
Iowa has harsh marijuana laws and arrested more than 6,600 people for marijuana offenses in 2010. First-offense possession of even a single joint is punishable by up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine, one of the most severe first offense penalties in the country. Unfortunately, these draconian penalties hit minority and low-income communities the hardest. According to the ACLU, blacks in Iowa are almost eight times more likely to be arrested for marijuana prohibition than whites.
In 2015, in addition to approving legislation to protect medical marijuana patients from arrest and prosecution, the Iowa Senate approved legislation that would have reduced the penalties for possessing marijuana. The maximum sentence for possessing up to five grams of marijuana would have been reduced to 30 days in jail, which would have been a big improvement upon the status quo. Sadly, the House failed to debate this sensible bill. This is why it is so critical that Iowans email their lawmakers in support of reducing marijuana possession penalties. Or, ask your legislators to end marijuana prohibition now!

Medical marijuana advocates want Iowa law expanded
(July 28, 2014)
|
DES MOINES – A narrowly focused medical marijuana law just took effect in Iowa, but advocates are already looking to see how they can expand access to the drug for the chronically ill.
State lawmakers this year approved legislation that allows the use of oil derived from marijuana to treat chronic epilepsy. The law — driven largely by advocacy from mothers of children with epilepsy — includes strict rules for acquiring the oil, such as requiring a state registration card and that the oil must be bought from another state that produces it.
State Sen. Joe Bolkcom, a Democrat from Iowa City, said he hopes the bill, which he sponsored, is a first step toward a more comprehensive medical marijuana law. While his past efforts have been unsuccessful, Bolkcom said he thinks the tide is turning. He hopes to get bipartisan support for such legislation in 2015.
"Members that supported the effort have gotten a lot of positive feedback from Iowans about this. People are more informed about it because of this year," Bolkcom said.
A total of 23 states and the District of Columbia have public medical marijuana programs, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Another 11, including Iowa, have more limited access laws. Advocates contend the drug eases the symptoms of illnesses such as cancer, Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis.
Gaining approval for even the limited marijuana oil law was difficult, and many Iowa lawmakers appear hesitant to go further.
Republican state Rep. Walt Rogers of Cedar Falls said he would not support broader legislation. He did not vote for the bill that passed this year, because he thought it sent the wrong message to teenagers about drug use.
"I am afraid of the slippery slope," said Rogers, adding that he feared permitting medical marijuana could lead to legalizing marijuana altogether.
A spokesman for Gov. Terry Branstad said the Republican governor thinks the state must be cautious about expanding a law that just took effect.
Marijuana remains classified as an illegal drug at the federal level, but President Barack Obama's administration has made it clear to federal prosecutors that it is not worth their time to go after people using medical marijuana in compliance with state laws.
A March poll by Quinnipiac University showed 81 percent of Iowa registered voters supported the legalization of medical marijuana for adults if a doctor prescribed it.

Iowa’s new medical marijuana law is limited at best
(July 2, 2014)
|
Iowa's new medical marijuana law officially took effect July 1st.
The new law will allow kids with epilepsy to use cannabis oil to relieve their symptoms, a treatment that is said to be extremely effective against seizures.
However, many families are saying that the new law has plenty of holes in it.
"Nothing is even ready for us to use until at least October," said Tina McDermott, whose 8-year-old son, Ryan, has a rare form of epilepsy called Dravet Syndrome.
"He had his first seizure when he was 9-weeks-old and I just noticed that his right arm was trembling," McDermott said. "So I took him to the ER and they told me he was having a seizure."
McDermott said that once Ryan was diagnosed, she joined forces with other mothers, whose children were suffering from the incurable disease, and started contacting state senators about cannabis oil.
"[It's been] a lot of emails, a lot of trying to explain to these senators how important it is," said McDermott.
"Some of them get it, some of them don't. They think we're going to turn out like Colorado, that it's going to be abused, that we're pushing for recreational marijuana; which we are not," said McDermott.
The law still has to go through a rules committee, who must approve it and then put it in front of the public for 35 days. After that, a neurologist who has seen the child for at least six months can prescribe the cannabis oil to the family, but only after they have already exhausted all other options.
Once the child has been approved for cannabis oil treatment, the family can apply for registration and then buy the medicine, which is where the real trouble comes into play.
Since Iowa's new medical marijuana law doesn't allow the cannabis oil to be sold in state, families have to travel to another state to actually buy it.
"It means I'd have to drive to Colorado, or fly to Colorado, and then I obviously can't fly back with it, so I'd have to drive back with it," said McDermott. "Then [I'd have to] cross over Nebraska state lines illegally and come home with it."
Iowa families will only be allowed 32-ounces of the cannabis oil at a time, which is about a six month supply.
McDermott said, if it gets too hard or Ryan's condition takes a turn for the worse, she will be forced to uproot her family and move to Colorado.
"He's been on so many [medications] for 8 years. So I've never known Ryan without being all medicated," McDermott said, confident the cannabis oil would help Ryan's condition.

Informational Guide on Medical Cannabis |
If you have ever heard of the song, “Lets Go Get Stoned,” as sung by Ray Charles or Joe Cocker, you know the lyrics were referring to getting high or using cannabis aka marijuana. This mind altering drug goes by other names as well; names such as weed, pot, joint, blunt, hash and mary jane are quite common among users. Cannabis is a plant that contains a chemical called cannabinoids or cannabinolidic acids.
Another substance that is found in cannabis is THC, or Tetrahydrocannabinol, which gives the users that “high” sensation. When speaking of marijuana, the actual substance used in creating the high feeling comes from the leaves and flowering tops of the cannabis plant. Marijuana is considered to be a schedule 1 controlled substance today, because of the THC, which can be highly potent, depending upon the concentration factor of the THC.

THE REEFER MADNESS ERA, REEFER MADNESS BOOKS (Info, History) By definition, it would be a contradiction in terms to list or classify a Reefer Madness book as a work of "Non-Fiction." Thus both genres are group together here simply as "Hard Cover" books; if only to distinguish them from the "Pulp Fiction" or "Dime Store novels" discussed elsewhere. However where appropriate the terms [Fiction] and [Non-Fiction] are used.

Proven : Cannabis is Safe Medicine
by Ian Williams Goddard | In reaction to medical cannabis access referendums on the ballots in Arizona and California, former presidents Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, and George Bush signed a letter stating that they "categorically oppose'' access to cannabis for its many proven therapeutic uses such as the prevention of blindness and epileptic seizures. Their chief concern was that legal medical access would send the message that cannabis is safe. The presidents can, however, lay their safety concerns to rest because the scientific literature overwhelmingly confirms that cannabis is both an effective and safe medicine.
The Cannabis Safety Profile. The journal PHARMACOLOGICAL REVIEWS reports that decades of research prove that, "Compared with legal drugs...marijuana does not pose greater risks." Yet based upon mortality statistics, we can safely conclude that cannabis is one of the safest medical drugs known, for, while prescription drugs, defined as safe by the FDA, kill up to 27,000 and aspirin up to 1,000 Americans per year, cannabis kills 0 per year.
