(11.25.2015) When I arrived in Ukraine, the country was stuck in a proxy war between the United States and Russia, and Star Wars election jokes seemed like the only thing the international media cared about. Weeks later, the votes were still not all counted; yet the winners had somehow been determined.
Watching this electoral absurdity on local TV while hanging out with a crew of neighborhood B-Boys in Odessa cafes afforded me a jaundiced insight into Ukraine’s psyche. But just finding the Quick Spins Crew took months—and occurred by accident.
One late summer night I was drinking al fresco at the Odessa pub Texas BBQ with a group of American expats that included a man wearing a 10-gallon hat. I reminisced about the joys of smoking marijuana, and explained to the 10-gallon hat why it was so hard to find workable weed in Ukraine.
Ukrainians, generalizing here, hate drugs and drug users. Narcos, as they are called, are considered the lowest form of life. One recent day, rather than prescribing sleeping pills, a doctor suggested drinking whiskey to help me sleep in a noisy apartment. Later that same day, a pharmacist offered Russian Valium, phenazepam, which is basically a roofie. It hits in two to three hours, and knocks you out.
Why not have normal drugs I ask? Not hypnotics?
“Physical addiction is weaker than emotional addiction, and this is physical,” the young pharmacist explains.
But physical addiction is worse than emotional addictive drugs like weed, I say.
“Yes, but it is weakness.”
That’s the post-USSR Ukraine perspective for you. Booze is fine, roofies too, but a drug that you emotionally enjoy—you are not strong.
Ukraine is among the strangest places in Europe—and Odessa is Ukraine’s strangest place. The Black Sea port city is the entry point for boatloads of drugs into Europe, but you can't buy cannabis in the city unless you’re willing to spend a ton of money and risk arrest. It makes enjoying life difficult.

Students around the world are rallying to support the struggle for freedom and peace in Ukraine and Venezuela.
Estudiantes por la Libertad Paraguay express their Solidarity with students in Venezuela.
About 12 people have died in Venezuela as a result of clashes with police, while at least 88 people have been killed in Ukraine before the protestors managed to defeat the regime’s tyranny. As Luis Eduardo Barrueto wrote on the blog last week, these riots are a result of governments suppressing its citizens questioning of government abuse and tyranny.
In response to these injustices, Students For Liberty members around the globe are showing their solidarity with the people of Venezuela and Ukraine and their basic human right to protest against corrupt governments.

any people got tips on where to go in Ukraine to find wild cannabis which can get you high?
I am not talking old escaped hemp etc. but looking for wild drug cannabis
also, I saw some photos of Ukrainian plants on here - but can't track them down now: was it Esbe, Raco or ? who had some nice pics of Ukranian plants in flower? ...
Think that "wild cannabis" "in Ukraine" is Ruderalis and as far as i know Ruderalis is at best weak auto flowering weed...
Hello, i'm outdoor grower from Ukraine - where are a lot of wild cannabis in Ukraine, and you can find many varietes - it's mostly ruderalis (yeah, early flowering time, narrow leafes, small height) and its mostly used for cooking milk - is a good shit.
But you can find some varieties of sativa-like plants. But mostly 90% is not high potency and not used for smoking.
The only real ukrainian sativa you can find in Crimea - south region (resort) of Ukraine and some south regions - not many people know where they are grown wild. Arjan (Green House bank) can make and expedition to ukrainian south) Many growers grow well-known plants from euro seeds banks like DP, Mandala.
Here is some pics of some wild hybrid - grown wild - tall >2 meters plants - used only for milk.
There is no 'official' information for ukrainian canabis, because of low interest, 80% of growers used proven seeds as i told before. MJ is illegal in Ukraine. Dont ever try to buy MJ on streets - 90% its a crap and police people. Only on south but you 100% need a guide to talk to local people)
If you want to get high in Ukraine you need to establish relationship with some grower (friend), dude you can trust.

Yup, I would try Crimea. Barney's has some Crimea Blue, which is said to contain some Ukrainian hash plant, along with blueberry. I grew some and the result show no sign of blueberry at all, and is all hashy/cheesy in flavour. Quite nice weed.
One thing could be to go to the Kazantip festival where you could meet people who can give you more information, be it party-goers or locals who are probably more open-minded than elsewhere, considering the crazy summers they've been through since quite a few years.
The fringes of the small hill-range south-east of the peninsula could be of interest.
Planning to go nearby Russia ? Abkhazia would be some place to visit, tropical micro-climate there !

Man, there are such phenotype variety of MJ plants in Ukraine but 80% of them just not enought potency. You can find stong looking 3 meters high sativas-like or as u described, different smells etc but they are mostly ex-technical agro plants still from USSR times.
The only worth looking plants grow wild in Crimea/Azov Wildness - it is worth expedition but the genetics are such variety. So the main reason of potency of some Crimea plants is Crimean climate.

Cannabis-Stealing Policeman Jailed in Ukraine

MOSCOW, December 24 (RIA Novosti) –
Showing a more exotic way to ruin your career through drugs, a policeman in central Ukraine was charged with stealing 15 kilograms of cannabis confiscated from a drug dealer.
The total haul obtained by drug police in Kirovograd Region from the dealer was 24 kilograms of pot kept in a big plastic drum, local television TSN said.
However, when weighed in the courtroom at the judge’s order, the drum tipped the scales at a mere nine kilos.
Shrinkage from drying was offered by police as the initial explanation, but forensic experts debunked the suggestion.
A subsequent check found that a police officer in charge of storing material evidence caved in to temptation and stole most of the cannabis.
The man tried to cover up his tracks by stuffing hay inside the drum, reports said, without specifying why he did not stuff enough hay to make up for the marijuana withdrawn.
The officer, whose name was withheld, was fired from the force and faces between five and 10 years behind bars over the incident.
It remained unclear where the missing cannabis went.

no chance at all! In the United States, most of states have already legalized medical use of marijuana and few - recreational use. In Ukraine, even personal use of weed isn't tolerated by police and if you're unlucky to get caught you'll either face a lawsuit or have to pay a huge bribe depending on the quantity found.
But even if you have very little pot with you, there's no guarantee cops won't put more to your pocket to make it excessive enough for arresting you. So, Ukraine is still lagging far far behind the USA in terms of weed legalization

N.J. Senate approves medical marijuana bill -

TRENTON BUREAU:
A Senate committee today cleared a measure that would allow medical use of marijuana in New Jersey.
The Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee voted to approve the long-stalled bill by a 6 to 1 margin; two senators abstained.
The bill calls for creating “alternative treatment centers” where people with chronic and terminal diseases would be allowed access to marijuana. Supporters say marijuana is a viable treatment option to alleviate pain in many cases.
“It is the definition of basic human decency that we do whatever we can to ease the pain and suffering of people living with severe chronic and terminal diseases,” said bill sponsor Sen. Nicholas Scutari, D-Union.
“When all other avenues of currently-approved pain relief have been exhausted, we need to give doctors the freedom to prescribe medical marijuana to give their patients a measure of comfort and dignity in the face of their debilitating diseases. This bill is about the most humane, compassionate option for those state residents who have nowhere else to turn in managing their illnesses.”
If ultimately approved by the full Legislature and signed by Governor Corzine, New Jersey would be the 14th state to allow medical use of marijuana.

A new study entitled Marijuana Effectiveness as an HIV Self-Care Strategy, which was released this past weekend in Clinical Nursing Research, indicates that persons living with HIV/AIDS rate cannabis as more effective in treating the symptoms of anxiety, depression, fatigue, diarrhea, and neuropathy than other prescription and over the counter medications.
The study, which was conducted over a two year period and included 775 patients from the USA, Africa, and Puerto Rico, assessed the use of cannabis as a symptom management approach for anxiety, depression, fatigue, diarrhea, nausea, and peripheral neuropathy. 27% of survey participants reported using cannabis for medicinal purposes.
Researchers wrote that cannabis use “was rated slightly more effective than antidepressants for anxiety and depression, Imodium for diarrhea, [over the counter] (OTC) medications for fatigue, and anti-epileptics and OTC medications for neuropathy” while cannabis was rated “slightly less effective for nausea than either prescribed or OTC medications.” Authors concluded that cannabis “is perceived by users as at least as effective as prescribed medications in symptom management.”

Poland government considers growing medical marijuana

With medical use of marijuana already legal in Poland, the government now mulls growing its own in order to save on import costs. This could also become an issue in Ukraine as the government and NGOs work toward adoption and implementation of a pharmaceutical reimbursement program.
Poland’s Ministry of Health wants to change the law in order to allow the growing of marijuana for medical use in Poland and is in talks with the Ministry of Justice over the matter, Deputy Health Minister Krzysztof Landa told Polish daily Dziennik Gazeta Prawna.
“Why should we pay the Netherlands, from which we import dried cannabis for PLN 10,000 or PLN 20,000 a month? Growing it in the country will be much cheaper,” said Landa.
Initially, the government agencies would be tasked with growing marijuana, but “ultimately it could be private plantations that meet legal requirements and are subject to systematic and detailed control,” the official added.

Can Developing a Cannabis Industry Help the Ukrainian Economy?

As Ukraine is searching for methods to remedy its economy, some new and even unconventional ways of generating revenues could be considered. Ukraine is strong in agriculture, so studying the world demand for agricultural goods should be a part of the strategy to improve the economy. Priorities should be focused on the most cost effective and highest value crops.
A new, although unconventional, industry to look at would be cannabis production for both domestic and foreign markets. Ukraine is already the world’s fourth largest producer of industrial hemp seed, although high THC-content cannabis is still criminalized.
All impacts should be included in a rational debate about cannabis policy. Social and possible health harm cannot be overlooked when implementing new cannabis laws. The tendency of the cannabis policies around the world and especially in the developed countries is leaning towards legalization of cannabis for medical and, to a lesser extent, recreational use.
Two years ago, Romania became the 10th country in EU to legalize cannabis for medical use. Legislative change will allow the Romanian Drug Agency to approve production of certain compounds of the plant which can help decrease pain, and reduce the frequency of seizures.

There was a time when cannabis produced most of the clothes or food in Ukraine, but the real contemporary use of this plant on a very large scale involves the energy market and biofuels. Both Ukraine and Putin’s Russia are looking in that direction.
Indian hemp was brought to Eastern Europe by Scythian tribes from Siberia, circa 2,500 years ago. The ancient Greek historian Herodotus wrote about the popularity of hemp smoke rituals among the Scythians. Cannabis has always been important for Ukrainian culture and industry, and was especially so between the 15th and mid-20th centuries.
In the 15th century, the local people of today’s Moldova and Ukraine were able to have their taxes paid in cannabis. After World War II, Ukraine became a major food supplier of the Soviet Union. It is believed that with its rich fields, the country is able to feed the whole of Europe.
Also the fuel and energy industry as well as heavy industry, especially weapons, were very strong branches. The Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev dreamed of transforming the Crimean Odessa, known as the Pearl of the Black Sea, into a world center of the hemp-hashish industry and of legalizing marijuana throughout the entire USSR. Unfortunately, he could not fulfill his plans. He was ousted from power by fans of vodka drinking.

US Government Says It Will Stop Interfering with Medical Marijuana |
According to this article, US Attorney General Eric Holder has said that states will be allowed to make their own rules about medical marijuana, and that the US federal government will stop raiding medical marijuana dispensaries in California. (See article “Can Marijuana Help Rescue California’s Economy?”at this link)
In the 1990s, several US states passed referendums which allowed marijuana to be used legally for medical purposes. In a referendum, the registered voters vote directly on the proposed law, as opposed to the law being passed by the state legislature. Thus, when these states passed these referendums, it meant that the citizens of these states really wanted medical marijuana to be made legal.
However, in a blatant disregard for democracy and the people’s will, under the Bush administration, the national government refused to accept this law, and carried out raids of the medical marijuana dispensaries.

The Scythians of Ukraine shocked the Greeks and Romans because they drank their wine full strength, straight and not mixed with water in the Greek tradition. The ancient Greeks had a saying "drinking the Scythian way" which was to drink wine straight. James and Thorpe seem to be unaware that ancient Scythia was located only in Ukraine not in Russia so they are in error to call the Scythians "ancient Russian people" (p. 331). Incidentally, we use the term Ukrainian Scythians to dinstinguish them from the culturally related Asian Pazyryk people in Siberia who were also called Scythians.
The Scythians were described by Herodotus 2,500 years ago as having small tents which served as vapor baths or saunas. However, the Scythians also improved their vapor steam baths by burning cannabis (marijuana or hashish) on hot stones so they got high along with their steam bath. Herotodus said innocently, "The Scythians enjoy it so much that they howl with pleasure." He said that the Scythian vapor bath of Ukraine gave off "a vapor unsurpassed by any vapor bath one could find in Greece" (p. 448).
Trajan's Column in Rome, built about 115 A.D., has a figure of an armored cavalryman, whose horse also has chain armor. He is probably a Sarmatian from Ukraine although James and Thorpe mistakenly say he is from southern Russia (p. 211).

Abstract:
This paper provides a partial reconstruction of the main features of the flora and vegetation of the central area of the city of Kiev (Kyiv in the Ukrainian-based transliteration), Ukraine, in early medieval times. The reconstruction is based on fossil spore and pollen samples.
Introduction:
Understanding the interactions between humans and the natural world is best solved using methods from both the natural sciences and historiography. The reliability of paleobotanical (or archeobotanical) reconstruction is very much enhanced by combining the tools of palynology (especially paleopalynology) and paleoethnobotany, in short, by studying microfossils alongside macrofossils.
From these data, we can confirm the immigration and naturalization status of many of the weedy species of present-day Kiev, as reported by V.V. Protopopova (1991). The most essential changes we've made are to the group known as the kenophytes (species that immigrated during the period from the 16th century to the present).
Several weedy species should now be recognized as archaeophytes rather than kenophytes. Along with those mentioned above and others, Cannabis sativa (and its weedy races, usually known collectively as Cannabis ruderalis Janisch.) should now be considered an archaeophyte in Kiev.

Book: Medical Cannabis Facilities.
Since California voters approved medical cannabis for use in 1996, most discussions surrounding it have involved either its biomedical or legal status. Left out of the discussion has been how medical cannabis patients developed a health service system of medical cannabis administration and what a best practice model of medical cannabis distribution might look like. This study surveyed 130 medical cannabis patients at 7 medical cannabis facilities in San Francisco and Berkeley, CA using an adapted version of Andersen's model of health service utilization.
Results show that medical cannabis patients have created a system of dispensing medical cannabis that also includes services such as counseling, entertainment and support groups; all important components of coping with chronic illness. Levels of satisfaction with facility care were fairly high, did not differ across study site and were significantly higher than nationally reported satisfaction with health care. 1. Since 1996, twelve states have legalized medical marijuana use: AK, CA, CO, HI, ME, MT, NV, NM, OR, RI, VT, and WA. Eight of the twelve did so through the initiative process. Hawaii's law was enacted by the legislature and signed by the governor in 2000, Vermont's was enacted by the legislature and passed into law without the governor's signature in May 2004, Rhode Island's was passed into law over the governor's veto in January 2006, and New Mexico's legislation was signed into law by Governor Bill Richardson on April 2, 2007.
