Spokespersons clearly get paid to say what they do, but that appalling claim by Associated Oregon Industries J.L. Wilson is stunning for the intellectual prostitution required to utter it. As the author of the first medical marijuana legislation introduced in Oregon and an author of the current Oregon Medical Marijuana Act I am outraged by Wilson's statement. However, it is but a small part of the ongoing effort by AOI attempt to discredit OMMA and those who are protected from prosecution by it for using medical marijuana. Wilson denigrates thousands of Oregonians suffering from "severe pain" for political ends. His colleague Don Harmon has been trying for years to pass this discriminatory legislation but has been turned back repeatedly by cooler heads Salem. He calls the protection accorded sick people by OMMA a product of "Oregon's permissiveness", and vows to roll back that "permissiveness". It's his "moral crusade" he says and, of course, moral crusades allow lying, so he and Wilson do. Freshman "Monica's" sympathy towards employed OMMP patients is shared by the 49% of Oregonians opposed to workplace discrimination against OMMP patients compared to 32% who support discrimination. Interestingly, the workplace accident rate has declined annually since the passage of OMMA and AOI can not point to any accident involving medical marijuana users.
